The Election Campaign in choosing a representative for the district will create widespread interest as a very hard battle is anticipated. Another very important event and one which deserves the support of the public is the Grand Ball which takes place this (Wednesday) evening in the Arnhura Road School room in aid of the school funds.

Only fourteen of the 21.3 cases of scarlet fever at present in the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Burwood are regarded as severe eases. During the week ended noon on Monday 58 cases (38 in tho metropolitan area) were reported in the Canterbury Health District, and one in the West Coast Health District. The previous week 57 cases wore reported in the Caiitcibui\ Health District.
The Public Works Department is putting in hand immediately the Walton gj river protection works towards which the County Council and settlers are assisting with funds. Mr Tlios Nolan, formerly County Roadman, will hg in charge of the work. Mr Nolan has carried out considerable river protection work, and with his experience in the class of protection to be placed in position, should carry out the work very effectively. The settlers are very pleased this work is lieing done before the spring floods come down.

The Blackball, Miners’ Union yesterday held a ballot on the two proposals with regard to the employment of men at the mine, which at Monday’s meeting of the Union were referred to the vote of the membership. These were: (1) That the married men and the single men with dependents should have the preference in employment; f2) That the work 1 ho shared among all of the members of the Union.
