Ik sef-help counts for .success, W’e.stlancl appears to he doing its. share- in tho task of attracting tourist traffic. Wo have on previous occasions referred to what is being done in the matter of publicity. A great deal lias been done in that respect, but the tourist traffic could not flourish by words alone There is something more substantial needed in the way of deeds. These, too, are being performed. Yesterday in a special article on South Westland, reference was made to the progress of the .southern district, and in particular to what is iieiiig done by private enterprise in the matter for catering for tourist traffic. Mention was made of tlie splendid motor services operating, and of the good work caterers are doing in providing good accommodation. What lias been done at Wa-ilio Gorge in that respect is outstanding. Now comes the effort from AYeheka, ami that too, is specially praiseworthy. We have often hoard that improved accommodation is required for the average traveller. So far as South W’eslland is concerned any reproach in that respect is l.eiiig removed at all the principal stopping places. 'l'be changes taking place have involved a considerable outlay, as well as a large expense in maintenance. This lias been done, evidencing confidence in the future of the district. The enterprise is very marked, and it deserves to succeed. AA'e believe it will. AA’itb the steady improvement in the roads, the bridging of the rivers and the publicity the district is receiving, more and more traffic will be attracted to the district. By entering for flip travellers, and providing a degree- of comfort ami convenience equal to that at the best -centres, visitors can hisrdlv be otherwise than pleased with their experience, and tlio upshot- will !p that hundreds of folk will go away walking- publicity, people fex lolling tlie attractions of the south, and resulting in an ever growing stream of traffic. In this way the enterprising |>o<>ple providing the first class accommodation will reap their reward. It is pleasing to know that tlie great attractions of tlie (list riel are now backed with facilities Tor enjoying a holiday to the full, and that in particular the comfort and convenience of the traveller will be as well catered for as in the chief centres. With this achieved there is no reason why the tourist traffic to Westland should not increase b.v leaps and bounds.
