FINED FOR HARBOURING. CHRISTCHURCH. August 27. The hearing concluded to-day of the cases against eight young men, charged with harbouring two girls, under sixteen years of age, who escaped from the State Institution at Harwood. After hearing the evidence, Mr Lowry, S.M., disposed of tho cases as follows: Victor Robert Blackburn, was convicted on three charges, and was lined £lO. ■

Ernest Crosier was convicted on three charges and fined €ls, while one charge against him was dismissed. 'Hie charges against George llolnski anil Albert Crosier were dismissed. Phillip Gibbons was convicted on one charge and was fined €5. Three other charges against him were dismissed. James Hannan was convicted on three charges and fined €25, while George Quaid was convicted on four charges and was fined £7. Charles 'I imotfiy Rogal was convicted on two charges and fined £lO.

George Ellis, associated with the growth of Hastings since it was formed into a Borough in 1880, died yesterday at Auckland at the age of 92 years. He was a member of the first Borough Council and was second Mayor of Hastings.

AUCKLAND. August 2(1. The new Congress Hall for the Salvation Army in Auckland was officially opened by the Governor-General yesterday afternoon. The building is a handsome structure of fifteen rooms and several halls, and the total cost, with tne land, was £23,250. The Gov-ernor-General said that he was pleased at the opportunity of showing his sincere sympathy with the Army and the great work which it was doing throughout Lite Dominion.

Aug. 28. Three occupants of a car which plunged oil the road at W luii'erata Hill, at night, had a remarkable escape. The ear turned a complete somersault and slid fifty feet down the hill before its descent was arrested by a tree. The car was extensively damaged, but with the exception of one small cut from falling glass, the occupants escaped injury.

MAN OVERBOARD. WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. After leaving Pitcairn Island ten days ago. the alarm of man overboard was raised on tho Corinthic, at eleven at night. The ship was at once turned about and a boat lowered, and a

passenger was got aboard again in thirteen minutes—fast work. 'lbis recalls that eighteen months ago when c lining out a man went overboard in broad daylight and was rescued in nine minutes. SOCIETY OF HEALTH. WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. A general conference of the Royal New Zealand Society of Health ol Women and Children was opened today l>v the Governor-General.. About 259 delegates were present Iroin all parts. The conference will extend over four clays. The Mayor welcomed the delegates. In the course of his address the Gov-ernor-General said one must he a very stupid, dull, unimaginative person if he did not recognise the enormous importance of the Society and the good it had done not only for the Dominion but for the Empire and world at large. The annual report, he said, showed infantile mortality was the lowest on record, 38.74 per thousand. The Minister of Health also addressed the Conference, speaking in high terms of appreciation ol the work ol tho Society. He mentioned that this year Parliament would vote 625,000 towards the work.

I)r Trubv King gave an interesting account of his visit to Great Britain ■md Europe, dealing especially with the infantile work there and mentioned that keen interest was being taken by their Majesties. He strongly emphasised the importance of specialising in obstetrics.
