THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Hokitika in 1866-67. “There is one point in which Hokitika surpasses every American town that I have seen—the goodness of its roads.” —Sir Charles Dilke. The Hokitika directory of 1866 contains a list of one hundred hotels. The Hokitikians (wrote Sir Chas. Dilke) flatter themselves that their city is the “ most rising place ” on earth. The social life of Hokitika and the goldfields in the rush days was unique in its way. The typical digger was a fine specimen of manhood: hardened to all kinds of privations, and somewhat given to excesses.

“ Hokitika,” so-called by a party of invading Maoris (many of whom were drowned in attempting to cross the river) signifies “ retreat,” or place of

“ turning hack.” Westland was first so-called on November 16th, 1860, by his Honour, Mr Justice Johnston, in his charge to the Grand Jury at Nelson.
