SIX GUINEA WIFE. CONSTANTINOPLE, July 6.
Before the promulgation of the lawforbidding polygamy Nouri Effendi, like many other Turks, had married three wives, expecting to be able to afford: to keep them. But his business affairs went from bad to worse until he could no’ longer support the conjugal expenses.
So observing that a pertain Jfehmed was showing marked attentions to one of the three, he entered into a compact with him and made her over to him for the sum of sixty Turkish pounds, or about six guineas. The parents appealed to the Council of Ancients of the. village to prevent the bargain, but without result. The six guineas payment was apparently regarded as the equivalent of a dowry.
