At the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board oil Friday last it was resolved that a" return be submitted showing the area and situation and tenure of all school sites not occupied by the Board for school purposes.
Another attempt is to lie made to carry on the gold-dredging enterprise at New River. The Terrace Gold Di'sdging Company Ltd. lias been formed at Auckland to carry on the business of the New River Gold Dredging Company, Ltd.

From the December quarter up till June the pupils of the Canterbury schools have decreased by 1484. There are now 37,232 pupils (boys 19,120, girls 18,112) compared with 38,716 in December (boys 19,886, girls 18,850) in the Board’s 383 schools. Tlie average attendance in December, however, was 34,703 while the average attendance in June was 33,539.

At a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board on Friday the appointment was confirmed of Miss A. E. Cornwall as assistant mistress at Greymouth. In the ease of Rewanui school, it was resolved to express regret that the committee’s request for the appointment of the former uneertificated teacher could not be complied with. Leave of absence was approved in the following eases—Awatuna, Miss M. Hogan (three months) ; Blackball, Miss T. Greaney (three months).

The Westland Competitions attracted large audiences for all the sessions on Saturday, indicating greatly increased popularity. It was fortunate the Princess Theatre was at the disjx>sal of the management as no other building in town could have held the audience present on Saturday night. Telegraphic advice has been received by the Kokatahi Dairy Company from the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board, notifying that Kokatahi Dairy Company has been awarded the Board’s trophy and prirse of £2O for most improved grade for 1927-28 butter. This is good news and the manager and Company are alike to be congratulated .on the success attained, which is complimentary. to both and it will be gratifying to the suppliers to know that their interests are being so capably looked after and attended.
The death took place at Westland Hospital last evening of Mr Joseph Noble, a former well known resident oi Beefton and Bunanga, who has of late been living in Hokitika. Deceased was a native of Yorkshire, England, and 83 years of age. He was a justice of the peace and a member of the Bunanga 'Masonic Lodge. He leaves one son, Jack, in Masterton and three daughetrs, one being Sirs A. H. Lawn, of Hokitika, another, Mrs Booth of Inangahua Juntcion, and another in Christchurch. The funeral is to take place to Greymoutli Cemetery on Wednesday.
At the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board on Friday the Building Comniitce reported : —Hokitika : It was resolved to accede to the committee’s request lor a grant iff £5 towards the purchase of linoleum, matting and runner for the teachers’ room. Ihe Humphreys Committee stated that it would supply the timber if the Boaul would provide iron for the roof and arrange for the erection of a lean-to fuel shed at the school, the existing fuel shed, measuring 20 feet by 32 feet, to bo used as a shelter shed for the children. —The application was granted. Boss: The Department advised as this case for the eighth on the Board’s ilst c'f remodelling proposals for the current year, the matter would receive attention when the applications preceding it on th elist had been, disposed of. The Committee is to he acquainted of the Department’s decision. Stafford-Golds-boroughi Mr H. J. Bignell reported that as the Stafford school was closed, |,o had made arrangements for the organ therein to he removed to the Goldsborough school.
