HOOVER’S CANDIDATURE. (Received this day at '11.15 a.m.) PALOALTO (Calif.) Aug. 12. With Hoover’s acceptance speech today, the Presidential campaign had its official opening when 65,000 persons crowded the Stanford University Football Stadium to hear him, while twenty million invisible auditors heard his words over one of the most extensive radio hook-ups ever employed in this country. Editorial comment from every section of the country is evenly divided along partisan lines, but the praise is unanimous on a high and dignified basis, whereon are the present issues of the campaign. There arises, however, some question concerning Mr Hoover’s attitude towards prohibition. It is agreed that his support of the eighteenth amendment, is unique, but even his closest friends admit he is not opposed to the lilxvratian of the law provided such liberalisation does not run counter to the constitution, while his opponents declare that while he does not favour the repeal of the eighteenth amendment they would like to know whether he endorses it. AMERICAN TRADE. WASHINGTON, Aug. 12. It is announced that United States foreign trade for the first half of 1928 were: Exports 2377 million dollars and imports 2084 million dollars, the favourable balance exceeding by fifty millions that of the similar period of 1927. Canada was the greatest single purchaser of American goods, 429 millions; Australasia was fifth with 84,004,000 dollars.
