ARRESTS FOR THEFTS.
GISBORNE, August 11. Police investigations into n series of burglaries in Waipau district culminated in the arrest of three Maori men and two youths. Within the knowledge of the police six burglaries were committed since the beginning of last month principally at stores of Waipau Farmers' Coy. The value of goods stolen being £6O.
Sergt. Carroll and Constable Olsen raided a pa where two of the men concerned lived, and recovered portion of tile stolen goods, but the birds had tlown. Police officers set out before daylight upon an arduous ride into the heart of the Itnukumara ranges and after a journey of 45 miles over rough bush trails arrived back with two prisoners and the balance of the stolen
property. In the Police Court at Awanui George Taipa Honiara. I.e Maro and Charles Ward pleaded guilty to burglaries, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
Another native, Philip Matenga, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for receiving stolen property, and two youths implicated in the thefts were sent to the Children's Court.
