Public accounts for the quarter ended on 30th June, appear in a special Gazette this week. The following summary of the transactions in ordinary revenue account (consolidated fund) lias been issued bv the Minister of Finance: — Revenue. —The total revenue *’ccoived for the period amounted to £4,167,937 as compared with £4,074,260 for the previous year. After allowing for separation of Post and Telegraph accounts, an increase of £93.677. Tho principal increases are: Motor vehicles duties licenses, etc., £417,869 (new item consequent on passing of Motor Spirits Act, 1927, and Section 24 of the Finance Act, 1927. This increase will he offset by an increase in expenditure under special acts when receipts are allocated). Stamp and death duties £31,484, interest on capital liability Post and Telegraph £72,030 (new item consequent on passing of the Post and Telegraph Amendment Act, 1927, which came into force on Ist April, 1928): miscellaneous £30,367; departmental receipts £39 .
The principal decreases are: Customs £518,289, income tax £24,617. Expenditure.—Tlje expenditure for the three months was permanent appropriations £4,091,737, annual appropriations £1.631.098, total £5,/22,835, ns compared with (after allowing for separation of Post anil Telegraph accounts) permanent appropriations £4.005.076, annual appropriations £l,640,435, total £5,645,511, during the corresponding period last year, an increase of £77,324 made up as follows: Permanent appropriations £86,661, increase annual appropriations to £9,237 a decrease of £77,424.
Increase under permanent appropriations, the principal increase are special acts £252,604 whilst there m a decrease of £174,681 in interest due to greater recoupments from other accounts, increase of £252,604 in special acts is mainly due to the following: Family Allowances Act, 1926, £7000; Finance Act, 1927, £195,600, (transfer to Main Highways account of tyre ‘tax and fees and fines under Motor Vehiles Act (now item). Losses on isolated sections and branch lines railway £2,550; Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, £10,200, proportion of tax on motor spirit payable to boroughs (new item); war pensions £28,100.
