Others include te German, Buckner, in the fastest heat of 48 3-5, and the Americans Bnrbuttc and Philipps. Javelin throwers produced further reversals of form. Lay failed to reproduce the powers wherewith he won the British championship on July 7th, within a few feet of Pentilla’s record. , entilla to-day was only sixth, after recently beating tbe record in practice. German (lags waved over the Stadium roads and there was applause and cheers when Fraluein Radke won and Hitomc with a good second, brought out the Japanese flag alongside the German.

Immediately afterwards the Rising Sun floated on the centre pole in recognition of Oda’s success, Japan’s first victory at Olympiad.

Though America has not yet won a track event it at present leads with ninety points. British Empire is second with sixty-five, then Finland thir-ty-two, including twenty-one scored to-dav. Germany Ims 28, Sweden 2/, Japan 11, France 10, Norway 9. The Empire’s total comprises: Britain 29, Ireland 6, South Africa 11, Canada 19, and Australia nil. AMSTERDAM, Aug. 2.

New Zealand shared Australia’s disappointments wifh Lay’s failure in the javelin throw. Lindquist, who was the winner, is a painter without work for eight months. He represents the Empire against America, at Stamford Bridge on lltli August. AMSTERDAM, Aug. 2.

At the Olympic Sports, in the 400 Metres Flat, 14th. heat, Neunmun (Germany) was first (time 50 3-osees.) and Macßeath (Canada) second. Stuart (Australia) was unplaced. In the hopistep-and-jump, Winter (Australia) who holds the. record for this event failed to qualify for the final. Oda (Japan) 49ft. 11 in. 1. Casey (America) 2, Zunlos (Finland) 3. '1 lie soft track was the chief reason for Winter hot striking form against his redoubtable opponents, including Zunlos and Rainio. W inter likes a hard ground wherefrom he bourn-lies when lie hops and steps, enabling a vigorous finishing jump, whereas lie found the new laid track dead and not assisting him. Otherwise lie felt wonderfully fit and his knee was well. Winter firstly jumped 46ft. o)in. then 46ft. oin. and thirdly 45ft. 10in. The New Zealander, Kalauglier, was also out of form and jumped 42ft. 4in. He twice overstepped the mark. Winter’s ill luck disappointed his supporters who were anticipating he would he the first to raise the Australian flag. Thereafter they hoped Whyte would at least be placed in the 1500 metres, but he Was greatly feeling yesterday’s effort. He ran pluckily but found his continental opponents too speedy, with a punishing finish. Whyte was beaten by 15 yards.
