A burglary took place at Messrs W. Perry and Co’s shop in Weld Street, between Saturday night and Monday morning. A considerable amount of silver, mostly threepenny and sixpenny pieces was taken from a safe, which was then closed and relocked. The police are making enquiries.

On Sunday evening about 6.30 o’clock at Tvumara the fire bell sounded an alarm, when it was discovered that an old unoccupied dwelling in Main Street, the property of Air S. Pewitt, ol Karoro, was on fire. Luckily the front break, which started in the back room, was noticed before it gained a great hold, and a few buckets of water was sufficient to put it out. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
An accident happened to E. Martyn whilst engaged at M’Lean’s sawmill, Jvumara. lie was assisting to remove a bush hauler with the aid of a jack when it suddenly gave a lurch, pinning his right hand between the red-hot boiler and the jack, with the result that the inside of the hand was badly lacerated, whilst the back was severely burned. Martyn only a short time ago lost three fingers off the same hand.
The death of Mr Arthur Webb occurred at bis late residence, Ilunanga, on Saturday afternoon, following an attack of double pneumonia. Deceased who was 44 years of age. and a native of Lancashire, bad resided IS years in the district, and was a member of and secretary to Baddeloy’s co-opera-tive party, at Dunollie. He was a
member of, and honorary auditor to the Ilunanga Howling Club, and a supporter of the Methodist Church. He leaves a widow and one son.

Beautiful weather prevailed on Sunday for the railway excursion to Otira from Christchurch. A total of 420 people made the trip, including 40 excursionists from Wellington, 112 from Ashburton, and 72 picked up on the north line. At Arthur’s Pass most of the people left the train lor the walk through the gorge. A party of shooting enthusiasts who set out from Cass were successful in bagging eight wild pigs. Members of the FullerGonsnljez Opera. Company were prevented from visiting Otira. As on former trips, the Bailway Department spared no effort to make the excursion a success.
