EIGHT FOR LIFE.
LONDON, June 5. The fierce fight in a jeweller’s shop in Newcastle, had a sequel at Newcastle yesterday when Sam Clyne, aged 32 Victor Childs, 27, and Harry Goodman 45, were charged with shopbreaking and doing grevious bodily harm to Detective Brown and Constable Marlow. Clyno’s head was bandaged, but P.C. Marlow is so badly injured that he is unable to leave hospital. Tt was stated that a fourth man was believed to have got away by swinging himself into tho street from an afcli lamp. Detective Brown nearly collapsed twice when giving evidence, and had to Amish his story seated. He said that when Marlow and lie found the throe men in the showroom Clvnes swung a: big jemmv like a motor spanner with a claw and cutting edge, and hit Marlow, who dropped. The men then went into a dark lobby (said Brown). Clyne blocking up the passage with a jemmy above Ills head. AA T e went at him though Marlow was sick through loss of blood. Child hit me on the jaw with h:s fist and Marlow was hit again. STRUCK AND KICKED. I was struck and kicked. A fallow, door, Clyne said, “There’s only through loss of blood fell behind tho two of the.—,out them.” I had lost my truncheon but Alarlow helped mo to get Ins, T got into the light as I could see they were going to do me in to get away. Clyne came again and swung his jemmy at me but missed. T hit him on the head with tho truncheon. He then ran downstairs bleeding like a. sheep. He was groggy, and I was groggy, but T was determined lo get Inn. Alarlow was coining round and came staggering down too. The other men had also gone. Brown described how lie chased Qlyiie who was shouting to civilians that they should .-top Brown as he wr-s a murderer. Civilians took up the chase with Brown and Clyne was arrested. The other men were afterwards caught. A remand was ordered and Sir Thomas Oliver, the chairman, expressed the hope that Brown would soon recover and complimented him upon his action.
