STOLEN MOTOR CAR BURNT. CHRISTCHURCH, July 30,

Joy-ridors on Saturday night stoic a five seater car belonging to the wife' of Sergeant Murray, of Addington Police. It was found later destroyed by fire near Middleton railway yard. The car was taken from outside Wharenui school, whence Sergeant Murray had gone to attend a euchre tournament. Tlie car was fully insured.

HOSPITAL ENQUIRY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 30.

The North Canterbury Hospital Board held an inquiry to-day into the circumstances surrounding the death at the Christchurch Hospital, of Nurse Helen Jones. In addition to the members of the Board, the District Health Officer, and the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr W. Fox, were present, as well as W. J. Hunter, representing the matron, Miss Muir.

The Chairman (Mr H. J. Hockley) said the open inquiry would be as full as possible, in order that the whole matter might he cleared up once and for all.

Mrs Jones, mother of the dead nurse, gave evidence that the family felt the girl had been badly treated, in that she had to spend her last two weeks on her feet, when she was not well. Witness had heard tire Matron say that if Nurse Jones were her nurse she would give her a good slapping.

MAN’S DEATH. AUCKLAND, July 30.

Harry Collins, aged 44, married, died in the hospital on Sunday. He was admitted on July 21st with a fractured leg, sustained in a collision on Penrose railway bridge, between a motor lorry and the motor cycle Collins was riding.

MOTOR. CAR ACCIDENT. TAIJMARUNUI, July 30.

As a result of a car driven by G. Thurston over-turning at a washed-out culvert on Worrall’s Hill, near laumarunui, on Saturday, Mrs Thurston was liospitalled with severe scalp wounds. She is progressing favourable.

THEFT CHARGE

PALMERSTON N., July 30

Appearing before Mr Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s, Court this morning Enoch Flintoff, formerly manager of De Luxe Theatre, was charged with theft of. £lO 18s, the property of Frederick Jackson, managing director of Theatre Enterprises. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. The police statement showed accused received the sum stated and had given a receipt hut no record of the money was in the books. Accused expressed a willingness to npnke restitution. Taking into consideration the fact that nothing was known against accused previously, the Magistrate admitted him to probation for two years, on condition that he repaid the money in three months. Tlie suppression of his name was refused.

MAORI’S FATAL FALL. GISBORNE, July 30

Heremeara Tohumatai was found on the road near Wha.ngara on Saturday evening with a fractured skull having evidently been thrown from a horse. He died at .the hospital yesterday. Hus mother, a Maori, with whom the deceased had l>een riding, reported the mishap to a roadman and then galloped away, and has not since been located.

Charles Todd, President of the New Zealand Alliance, who originally estimated his candidature for Wakatipu, will now contest Dunedin South in the Reform interest.

MAUNGANUI DELAYED. WELLINGTON, July 30

The Union Company advises that the Maunganui, south bound from- Frisco, is still delayed by engine trouble, and will not arrive at Wellington till noon on Thursday, three days’ late. She will remain at Wellington to effect repairs, and will sail on the 14th. Aug. for Raratongn, Papeete and Frisco. Passengers who were proceeding to Sydney by the Maunganui will transfer to the Marania leaving Wellington on Friday afternoon. The Malieno, which leaves Sydney on 10th. for Wellington, will connect with the Maunganui. Cargo, from Frisco by the Maunganui; will be transhipped by the Mamma and Karetu, the latter leaving here on Saturday... TWO FIRES. ; THAMES, July 30. There were two fires during the week end. On Sunday morning an outbreak gutted the. shop of James Thogg, tolmconist, in Pollen St., damaging C. &. Donovan’s dental rooms on the south side. Insurances on Thogg’s building is £SOO in the State Office and on the stock £250 in the Royal Office. Donovan’s buildings, £9OO and contents £220 in the State Office. This morning the residence of Mrs S. Levin, in Pollen St., had one room gutted and others badly smoked. Insurances on building amounted to £2a() and furniture £225 in the Eagle anc Star Office. The Brigade made excellent saves and both times as a strong easterly gale was ranging.

MILKMAN FINED. AVANGANUF, July 30

Horace Alabaster was fined £5, with costs, to-day for selling milk to Inspector Fear,.which contained 22 per cent added water. Defendant' said he could not understand bow the water got there. Magistrate Barton said he believed lb was the biggest percentage of water he ever had to deal with. GAMING ACT VIOLATED. TIMARU, July 30.

At the Police Court before Justices, Raymond Irvine was charged with conducting a game of chance, to wit, a cross-word competition, contrary t? Section 41 of the Gaming Act 1908. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £5 and costs. On a second charge he was convicted. REWANUI fire. GREYMOUTH, July 30.

The boarding house at Rewanui owned bv the Mines Department was destroved by fire last night. It was insured for £9OO in the State. Nothing as saved. The origin is unknown. WOUND IN HEAD. NAPIER, July 30. Holmes Edge, a farm hand, was admitted to the liospital with a bullet wound in liis head. His condition is critical.
