Goods traffic from the AVest Coast sent through the Otira tunnel last week amounts to 11,246 tons compared wit 11,518 tons for the previous year’s corresponding period.
The Rev. J. A. Jermyn, present vicar of AVestport, lias notified his acceptance of the charge of the parish of Holy Trinity, Greymouth, rendered vacant by the transfer of Archdeacon Carr to Picton. It is understood that Mr Jermyn will assume his new charge early in September.
The Greymouth Borough Council has granted a lease of the Town Hall to Air A. Behan at a rental of £425 per annum for a term of three yea ns on the same terms in other respects as the present leastI', 1 ', on condition that he gives the same consideration to charitable functions for which the Town Hall is required, ns in the past.
There was quite,an invasion of Grcymouth school representatives on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the Technical school football team and a host of supporters, the girls came in force to play basket ball. The scene on Cass Square was quite a busy one, the basket 'ball games attracting quite a lot of attention.
The following AVest Coast nurses were successful in the State examinations held in June:—Passed with 75 per cent, and over: Ruth Rnyner (AVestport Hospital), Laura Benyon, Ada Oastlehow (Hokitika Hospital). Passed: Hinemoa Curtis, Hivera Cooper (AVestport Hospital). Completed pass: AUolet B. Blacktopp (medical) Grey Hospital. Partial pass: Irene J. O’Neill (medical) Grey Hospital.
Tlie Hokitika Gun Club held No. 4 shoot yesterday for the Coltman Cup, resulting in J. McCormack proving successful after a tie with J. Mcßae, 8 birds each, winning on the fourth bird. The next highest scorers were C. Preston 6, A\ r . Berry 4, C. J. King J. Haile and E. J. Lloyd 4 birds each. The next cup challenge shoot takes place on August 12th.
The community value of C'nss Square was well evidenced again on Saturday by the large gathering of young and old assembled to witness the outdoor sport in progress. There was quite nv influx of Greymouth and country visitors, and special interest was centred in the football and basket ball matches in progress. The latter games drew quite ail interested number of spectators. The play by the senior girls was very' good, and the games exciting. The exhibition of football by tlio school teams also proved of special interest. Cass Square is certainly an ideal recreation ground both in situation and condition for the enjoyment c.f field sports, and everything possible should be done to maintain the ground in the best condition for the purpose it s-rv 60 well.
