FARMERS CONFERENCE, WELLINGTON, July 24
The Farmers’ Union Conference opened to-day when Air A. J. Poison delivered the Presidential address. The Conference was addressed by the Governor. He said he had travelled over many parts of New Zealand and had become acquainted with the conditions of farming, therefore he felt more at home addressing the Conference. He was not there to teach them anything but to show by his presence, the interest he took in the improved prosperity of the country. He referred to the importance of primary industries and said he was glad to know the primary object of the Union was for improving methods in production and not dabbling in polities. He imagined the Conference would carry on discussions along three main lines—improvements in farming methods, reduction of costs including co-operation, and methods of buying and selling; third, the development of markets. Advertising was of the utmost importance and there was room for expansion. In this regard he strongly advocated giving attention to pig raising and bacon curing, also other side lines in farming to provide against bad times that must come from time to time, mentioning fruit and tobacco.
