"ALIAS THE DEACON” —TO-NIGHT.

“ .Philadelphia Joe ” acted ns technical director for part of “ Alias the Deacon,” the Universal-Jewel production starring Jean Hersholt, which is; playing at the Princess this (Friday) evening. “Philadelphia Joe’s” last name is Mitchell; and he is proud of the fact that he is a professional hobo. He has been hopping freight trains and blind baggages and panhandling meals and singing hymns in order to dine and sleep in missions for ten years and lie is prond of it. But the company which filmed “ Alias the Deacon” gave him a. temporary job—bis first work in: some years—because he knew all about tlie scenes in hand, and because bo was good for many laughs with his numerous wise-cracks. The company made the acquaintance of Joe when a sequence was being filmed for the picture in which the hero made a hobo trip in a. boxcar. The scenes were shot in a railroad yard in Los Angeles and tlie activities of picture-making disturbed the slumber of Joe, Who had established temporary headquarters in the car which had been assigned to tlie movio troupe. He watched them make | the scenes with detached interest, finally offered some suggestions which would make the sequence more realistic and wound up by playing a bit in the scenes himself and schooling the players in the mannerisms and customs of the professional “bum.” Aside from “ Philadelphia Joe,” the cast of “ Alias tlie Deacon” includes Ralph Graves, June Marlowe, Myrtle .Stedman, Ned Sparks, Tom Kennedy, M.auriee Murphy, George West 'and others.
