RANFURLY SHIELD, i WAIRARAPA BEAT CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. Canterbury lost the Ranfurly Shield to-day by the narrow margin of one ■point, when they were beaten by Wairapa by eights points to seven. The winners scored two tries, one of which was converted, and the losers kicked a penalty goal and potted a goal. In the first spell, Canterbury, playing against the wind, had a territorial advantage, and they looked the better side. The half-time score was three to nil in favour of Wairarapa, a try l>eing scored by Jury after some faulty handling by the local backs.
Early in the second spell, Canterbury equalised with a penalty goat, and then Oliver gave them a lead of four points with a very smart potted goal. After hard play, in which the green forwards, who were now an improved pack, out-plaved the local men, the hall went to Cundy, who shot out towards me wmg, and then short-punted infield. Cooke, who evidently had anticipated the movement, urns there to take the ball, and he scored a magnificent try behind the posts, kicking a goal himself. This was the last score of the match, and thereafter the greens had all the better of the game.
WIN FOR ENGLISHMEN. SYDNEY, July 18. At Parker to-day the English Rugby League team defeated the Far "West reps by 22—9. SYDNEY, July 19. England’s hacks handled the ball poorly at the start and the locals drew first blood with an unconverted try. Then the Englishmen asserted their superiority and the spell ended in their favour —17 to 3. The second spell saw both sides playing well, hut the visitors advantage was too great for the locals to overcome.
