MAYOR DEAD

TAJIIAPE, July 16

The Mayor of Taihapo, A. T. Joblin, died oil Sunday morning; aged 66. Ho had been ill for several months from heart complaint. Ho leaves a widow, four sous and two daughters.

A NOTABLE CAREER. AUCKLAND, July 16

George Bruco, who died at Takapuna yesterday, was born at Dundee in 1839. He was on the sailing vessel outley which carried stores to the troops in Crimea and was a spectator of tho charge of tho Light Brigade at Balaclava, and as a hospital assistant came into personal contact with Florence Nightingale. He came to New Zealand in 1867 and later was secretary to the Oamaru Hospital Board for some years.

ALLEGED STABBING. TIMARU, July 1C

As a sequel to the dispute between a sailor and a lamp-trimmer aboard the motor vessel, Taranaki, Joseph William Shields appeared before a Magistrate to-day on a charge of having assaulted Francis Powell by stabbing him with a knife, both men being under tho influence of drink at the time. Alter hearing evidence tho accused was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court.

McCarthy trust. WELLINGTON, July 1C

One of the most important charitable trusts administered in the Dominion is the F. G. McCarthy trust. It is fourteen years since its inception, which, arises out of tho will of McCarthy. During tho period of it« existence there liavo been allocated from its revenue £133,527 for charitable and educational purposes. This year a record sum of £14.500 is being distributed.

NATIVE GAME TAKING. GREYMOUTH, July 16. Cornelius Vincent O’Neill was fined £3 with costs on a charge of taking native game, being caught with three pigeons in his possession.

APPEAL COURT DECISION. WELLINGTON. July 16

In the Appeal Court this morning, judgment was given in the Wright versus Morgan case, which was hoard on -Ith inst. Tn delivering the judgment. Justice (Smith said the sole question in the appeal is as to' the basis upon which Douglas Wright should pay an occupation rent for the use of two estates Surrey Hills and Windermere. The Judge in the court below found that the occupation rent should bo based on the Government valuations of land from time to time. In doing so lie exercised bis discretion as to what was practically just. In the circumstances wc agree with that the decision on appeal must be dismissed. Subsequent experience mndo it clear that for the year 1921 even the Government valuations ivere excessive, and Donnelly has offered to reduce the Government valuation for that year by a sum of ‘£18,500. The judgment of the court below will ho varied accordingly. Costs allowed to respondents on. the highest scale as from a .distance.

FORGERY CHARGE. AUCKLAND, July 16

. At the Police Court James Ross Morris was charged with obtaining money from the Post Office Savings Bank at'Auckland by forging a withdrawal slip, for eight pounds which wits certified not over eight pounds. Ho then altered the figures to eighty and the words to eighty. He said lie did it with the connivance of’ a lady friend to whom he said lie gave £7O. Ho was attempting a similar trick at AVellington Post Office Savings Bank when he was arrested by Detective Boylish and charged with forgery at Auckland. He pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.

SHIPPING LAW. NAPIER, July 16.

William George Lovell for putting, to sea without a certificate of survey for the trawler Oliinemuri was fined £lO. On a charge of not having the ship’s compasses adjusted he was fined £5.

ANTHRAX REPORT DENIED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. The reported case of anthrax in the Selwyn County 'is now denied. The authorities stating the death of a cow was due to arsenical poisoning.

FIGHT BROADCAST. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. Mr A. R, Harris, general manager of the Radio Broadcasting Co., lias received a cable from the company’s representative in New York, stating that arrangements for putting a short-wave description on the air have been compie ted. The wave-length has not yet been definitely settled. It is hoped by the Broadcasting Co. that it will be possible to pipk up the short-wave description with sufficient strength and clarity to enable it to be put on the air by New Zealand stations.

A CLOSE CALL. GISBORNE, July 16.

Mr and Mrs John O’Grady had a close call on Saturday night when the house they occupied at Kaitai was destroyed by fire. So..dense was the smoke that Mrs O’Grady was overcome and had to be assisted out her voung baby. O’Grady then .eseued his two year old son just in tie nick of time. The occupants sated nothing.

MAORI BOY DROWNED. WHANGARF.I, July 16. A Maori boy of eight years, Charlie Maki, was drowned in a creek a Whananaki yesterday.
