■Lord Iveagh has been elected president of tho Federation of Chambers of Oommert'e of the British Empire, in succession to Lord Kylsant. Sir Arthur Shirley Benn becomes chairman of the council in place of Sir Edward Davison.

CO-OPERATION IN INDUSTRY.

REPORT OF CONFERENCE.

RUGBY, July 12

In accordance with the decision of tho Mond-Turner joint conference for securing co-operation between Capital and Labour an interim report of the conference was yesterday submitted to the two lending employers organisations. Special committees were set up by each to ascertain the views of members.

The report, inter alia, recommends the creation of a national industrial council, the main functions of which would bo to hold regular meetings for consultation on tho widest questions concerning industry and industrial progress, to establish a joint standing committeo for the appointment of joint conciliation boards, and to establish machinery for continuous investigation into industrial problems. The, Council of the Federation of British Industries, in referring the report to a 'committee, promised the most sympathetic consideration of the recommendations, and declared itself to he whole-heartedly in favour of the prime objects of the conference.

The committeo which the federation has appointed will confer with the National Federation of Employers’ Organisations, the council of which pased a resolution yesterday recognising tho far-reacfiing nature of the questions raised, submitting the report to the individual federations within its membership and referring it to a committee for a. full report on the questions raised.

The Mond-Turner conference will he tho principal subject of discussion at the sixth Trades Union Conference at .Swansea in September, and the principle of closer co-operation Involved in tho report v'ill, it is expected, play a very important part in the elections to tho new General Council of tho Congress.

The Duke of Gloucester, the King’s third son, made tho first appearance <>f any member of the Royal - Family in a race under Jockey Club rules at Salisbury to-day. when he rode in the Selling Plate at tho Bilbury Club meeting. There were nine runners and the Duke, riding a good race, finished third.

■Though the Prince of Wales is tetter known as a horseman than® his younger brother, the Puke of Gloucester is regarded as being by far the better rider of the two. He was the first of tho King’s sons to win a point-to-point race in 1921—thougli the Prince of Wales won a similar race only a few days later. The Puke is a fine polo player, very little short of international standard.
