HEAT AVAVE FATALITIES.
(Received this day at S a.m.) LONDON, July 15. Three men collapsed in the streets of London from heat and died. a , Sixty girls and men employed at a * Neweastl-ou-Tyne drapery store were treated at an infirmary for poisoning after drinking lemonade distributed during the sale time rush. Hundreds fainted during the unveiling of the Bolton war memorial.
HALIFAX BYE-ELECTION
LONDON, July 14. Tho bye-election for the Halifax seat in the House of Commons, due 'to the retirement of tho Right Hon. Ji -H. AVhitley (Liberal) was held to-day, and resulted as follows : Alderman Longbottom (Labour) 17,533 Alajor Barnes (Liberal) 12,585 Alajor Crossley (Conservative) 10,864 Rt. lion. Air AVhitley was at last election returned unopposed.
FACTORY ATTACKED. BERLIN, July 14
Two thousand textile strikers at Lodz, in Poland, invaded a mill and demolished the plant. ' They burned the ledgers, and thrashed two managers. Afterwards, they stoned the police, who then fired, wounding fourteen.
RELEASE OF PRISONERS. BERLIN, July 13,
The German Reichstag has adjourned till the autumn, after passing an amnesty bill which it is estimated will release many hundreds, including the last of tho soldiers sentenced by the ex-Kaiser’s court martial, members of tbe Black Reichswclir, Communists and many non-political offenders whose crimes may be attributed to the distress and inflation period. v
PRUSSIAN POLICE. BERLIN, July 13.
“On no account shall children ho fired at,’’ says a new police decree issued by the Prussian Alinister of the Interior, pointing out that the police employ revolvers somewhat recklessly. They are entitled to fire if lives are in danger, or if an arrested criminal tries to escape ,after the warning: “Hands up or I fire.” It is hoped that the police will no longer firo to stop persons guilty of trivial offences from escaping!' ; ‘

Tlie Labour split in South Africa will not precipitate a crisis, according to tbe Hon. Air Rdoh (Alinister,/>f Justice),' who states that the Premier, Air Hertzog,' will merely acknowledge tbe letter announcing the expulsion of tho Labour Ministers from the Labour Party, and the present Pact will continue until Hie general ejection. Air Roos, however, drops a bombshellfor tho Labourites by declaring that the Nationalists will expect to gain lialf-a-dozen seats in the Transvaal that at present are allotted to Labour. This may precipatc a Labour breakaway from the pact.
