FLYING THE TASAIAN

CHRISTCHURCH, July 11

Air J. A. Pliilp, local manager of the Atlantic Union Oil Coy. has received advice from the head office at AVellington that a. private cable has been received from Captain Kingston! Smith stating that the Southern Cross will leave for New Zealand any time now. Captain Kingsford Smith intends landing at Christchurch.

No definite word has been received as to what hour the fliers intend to leave and land.

It is presumed that Captain Kingston! Smith and his companions will commence the flight as soon as weather conditions are favourable.

LOOK-OUT TO BE KEPT BY SETTLERS.

AVELLINGTON, July 10.

AVlien it was announced that- Squad-ron-Leader Kingsford Smith and Flight-Lieutenant Uhn intended to fly , tlie Tasman Sen from Australia, Air R. P. Hudson, ALP. for Alotueka, brought to the notice of the Post-master-General a suggestion made by Mr Fletcher, chairman of the Collingwood County Council, that settlers on the west coast of the. South Island should he asked to keep a look-out for the aeroplane Southern Cross, and report to the nearest postmaster immediately it was sighted. Air Noswortliy agreed that this should bo done, and arrangements are to he made to have settlers on watch for the machine when the approximate time of its arrival over tlie coast line is known. ;

AYELLINGTON, July 12.

A cable received in Wellington states Capt. Kingsford-Smith’s flight to New Zealand may be started at any time now. Christchurch lias been chosen ns the landing place.
