MINERS FINED. GEEYMOUTH, July 9. Three Dobson miners were each fined £2 with costs, for having matches in their possession, whilst in the mine. One State miner was fined 10s with costs for a similar offence,. Another State miner was convicted and discharged for having a cigarette in his possession.

FALCON ISLAND. AUCKLAND, July 9. The Tofua, which arrived from the Islands this morning, steamed round Falcon Island, which was more or less active, sending up mud and cinders at intervals, 50 ft. high. The contour of tlio Island was much the same as when the Tofua visited the Island a month ago, when the Hag of Tonga was planted by the King of Tonga. The flag had disappeared, having probably been blown down. Passengers by the Tofua included W. G. Riddle, of Wellington, after a round trip, and Capt. William 8011, Commissioner of Savnu, who will spend five months in New Zealand, Three jockeys, Barry and Morris brothers (2), returned with their wives by the Tofua to-day after a tour of the Islands.

A CAR THIEF. NAPIER, July 9. John Aldridge, charged with converting a car to his own use was sentenced ,to two months’ hard labour.

SPORTING ACCIDENTS. b WELLINGTON, July 9. Four football accidents were recorded on Saturday, two of them fractured ankles. A basket-ball girl was sent to the hospital with an injured ankle.

FATAL FIRE. DUNEDIN, July 9

Horace Mann, aged 61, was burned to death early this morning in a twostorey house at York Place, occupied by him with two elderly single sisters, Mary Jane, an invalid, and Ellen. The former is suffering from shock and the hitter from burns on the hands and head. Neither is in sidangerous condition.

The fire occurred in the sisters bedroom. A candle ignited the curtain. Manir got the invalid sister out, then returning, and was seen no more, his body i being found by the brigade on top of the stairs. The other sister, in seeking to escape wandered into a shed, where she was trapped by flames shooting from the burning building. The brigade got her out. The house and furniture was extensively damaged.

MISHAP TO TRAIN. WHANGAREI, July 9.

A peculiar mishap- befel the northbound express on Saturday afternoon. When nearing Wlmkapara, a willow tree uprooted by a gale, fell upon the engine and scraped alongside several coaches. Sixteen windows were smashed and some passengers received slight cuts, otherwise, escaping very fortunately.

MOTOR TRUCK ACCIDENT. WHANGAREf. July 9. A blow-out of a black tyre caused a shattering capsize of a motor truck conveying three ladies and three gentlemen, members of the Municipal Choir town wards, after giving a- sacred concert yesterday afternoon at the -district hospital, to where all were reconveyed after extrication from the wreckage. Mrs Aldred, with forehead bruises, and Airs Quaille, head injuries, remained unconscious for several hours, and along with MrsTurner (severe shock) remain in' the hospital. The male members were able to return home after treatment. Messrs Drayton and Yenadaies were badly bruised generally and cut on hips and legs. Turner had his arms ricked and eye cut. Calvert, jur., (owner and driver) flesh torn from fingers of right hand. DAIRY PRODUCE. WELLINGTON, July 9. The dairy division grading figures for eleven months ending June show an increase for butter of 3.8 per cent at 73,459 tons, and for cheese a decrease of 0.95 per cent at- 75,389 tons, a-s compared with the corresponding period of the preceding season. Reduced to terms of butterfat, equivalent gradings, dairy produce for eleven months show an increase of 2.31 per cent over gradings for the corresponding period of the preceding sesnon. ARiSON ALLEGED. GISBORNE, July 9. At the Coroner’s inquest on the fire at Makarka stables on May 29tli, Coroner Lewy, IS.MV, fbund that ’the evidence pointed to the fire being deliberately started by Georgo Campbell. He added as a riderl would draw the attention of the police to the gross perjury, which in my opinion. has been committed by the witness, George Campbell. Campbell was arrested on a charge of 1 arson and remanded.

MISSING FISHERMEN. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 0. ■|Vo men, Alfred 'Allen, a fishern,an, aged 30, and-Percy James Bar- , tlioloinew, a labourer, aged 50, left the harbour on Friday morning in a motor launch and have not returned. The Harbour Board launch was out yesterday and again this morning searching but found no trace. The men had only about six gallons of benine and no provisions, beyond a few sandwiches. The Harbour Board launch is still out searching. burglars at work. AUCKLAND, July 9. Burglars entered the premises of Ambury Milk Coy., Newton Road, over the week-end. By the nse of explosives they broke down the door of the strong room six feet in height and weighing two hundredweight and also made an attempt on the safe which resisted attack. SENSATIONAL BURGLARIES. TAUMARUNUI, July 9. During the week-end sensational burglaries took place in Taumarunui. Burglars dynamited a safe in the office of the Taumarunui Hardware Company, taking about £ls in casli and a few cheques. A safe in the office of Ross and Hartnett’s joinery factory, taking £5 cash and £4 in cheques. They also dynamited the Farmers Auctioneering Company’s strongroom | here. They blew the strongroom door j open, hut apparently were disturbed and left the safe untouched. They took £1 from a drawer. Residents report hearing dull reports between two and three o’clock on Saturday morning, when presumably the hardware and joinery offices were burgled. The intruders appeared to have attacked the auctioneering company s strongroom last night at a fairly early hour, as nearby people heard a detonation The consequent disturbance apparently frightened the burglars, who decamped almost empty handed.

AUCKLAND, July 9An order against Mary Ellen AVoodley and William Ateldrum, for certiorari in order to remove it into the Supreme Court and there to quash the order made against John Charles Woodley, formerly solicitor of Auckland for separation, maintenance and guardianship, on, Sept 15 at Hokitika, was made to-day by Judge McGregor, ill » reserved

judgment. Defendants were the wife of plaintiff and Alagistrate. Airs Woodley was residing at Hokitika when an order was made against.. Woodlev. then a prisoner at Auckland. The grounds for the application for certiorari were broadly that « separate order was made by Air ARldi'iun without jurisdiction, in that by the latter s conduct the plaintiff had been precluded from placing any evidence liefore the court oil the hearing of the complaint and an adjournment to permit of the taking of Woodley’s evidence, and that of four other witnesses was refused, when AA oodley made a written application on September 2nd.
