.DISTRICT DEVELOPMENTS. The general outlook for the town and district, as was outlined in particulars published on Saturday, should ensure the fullest faith as to the immediate future of the place. There is no doubt the mining possibilities are always likely to develop© favourably. This Const is so highly auriferous that gold bearing leds may be recovered at any time. Then, again, there is the attention to localities which in former times were known to be highly auriferous. The mining being revived in the Waimea district and in South Westland cover localities which in other days were famous for their gold yields. Modern methods of dealing with the drifts, as well as combating water, will aid the miner in treating ground which had to be left in former days when the system was so primitive. The rich Rimu Flat is to a great extent in a different category, because in former times only the shallow ground was worked. Now the deeper leads can be reached and they are .proving also the richer. In this way then the mining industry must receive a considerable fillip. The enterprise of those entering on these projects promises to be well rewarded. Industrially these opertions will do the district good. Creating more employment one of the urgent needs of the place will be served. It appears likely, also, that the flax milling enterprise now taking shape will absorb a grent deal of labour, so that here will be a second string to the how. The report of direct shipping between Wellington and Hokitika is another forward step which must leave, its mark on the times. The shipping will selve the.sawmilling trade and might easily lead to an increased output, it must at least be a help. The farming community also, encouraged by the past successful season will produce far more stock next season. In regard to lambs there should ho a marked increase, and the wool clip will he larger. The butter production has been a record for most factories, and the yield has brought extra returns to the district. Farming and settlement generally will bo expanding quantities, and will be special factors in the material progress of the district. The tourist season in the coming summer will also show a great increase, so that from every point of view much prosperity will attend the progress which is coming this way in the immediate future.
