STOLEN SKINS

INVERCARGILL, July 5

Charged in the Alagistrate’s Court to-day with breaking and entering the, wool and skin store of AVilliam Johnston, of AVyndham, and stealing opossum and rabbit skins to an approximate value of £BS, Benjamin John Alorrah admitted the offence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

ROTORUA PROTESTS

ROTORUA, July 5,

At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and other local bodies last night, strong protests were voiced at the tono of the articles in the Auckland “Star” and “Sun” in respect to the Rotorua-Taupo railway, and especially with regard to a message from the Bay of Plenty Development League opposing construction. In view of the fact that tho League at its annual conference had unanimously supported the project, the meeting decided to write to the Premier expressing appreciation and congratulating him on fulfilling his promise after two royal commissions had reported favourably; also that copies of the letter be sent to the Atinister of Works, Air F. F. Hockly, M.P., the New Zealand Settlement and Development League, “Star,” “Sun,” “Evening Post,” “ Dominion,” and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce.

THEFT CHARGE. INVERCARGILL, July 5.

Francis Augustus •Stempa was convicted of stealing milking machine parts to the value of £25, the property of Wilkins', Ltd.', Invercargill. ' Sentence was deferred until, after the hearing of other charges against accused in the Supreme Court.

WOMAN’S SUICIDE. DUNEDIN, July 5,

Louisa Edith Keenan, who resided at Afelbourne Street, South Dunedin, was found by her son at tho point of death when he called at her homo at II o’clock this morning.

It was the son’s habit to. call on occasions during the week to see his mother, and when he went to the house this morning he found her lying in the bathroom, with a severe wound in her throat and a razor on tho floor nearby. Death followed in a few minutes.

At an inquest held in the afternoon, it was stated tiiat deceased, who was 57 years of age, laid been ill health, and a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.

Annie Samson, a single woman, 31 years of age, was found dead in lied at 9 o’clock this morning, in a. room which she had rented in Moray Place. She had boon suffering from heart trouble and an affection of the eyes for which she had been treated by a doctor

TRIAIAIER’S TRAGIC END

AUCKLAND, July 5,

A tragic accident marred the voyage of tho Shaw Snviile Coy’s ship Arnwa, which arrived nt Auckland from Southampton. At four o’clock on the morning of June Bth, two days before the vessel arrived at Colon, a trimmer named Dennis Cain, aged 21, jumped overboard from the main deck into the shark-infested waters at the Caribbean Sea, and was never seen again. A lifeboat was launched, but after an exhaustive search, returned to report no trace of him.

OPIUAI DEN RAID. WELLINGTON, July 5. . Following a raid on a house specially fitted up for opium smoking, I-ow Leong was fined £SO, in default three months’ imprisonment. A charge against Wong Hong V" dismissed, there being no evidence that he was smoking.

At a meeting of the council of the Royal Agricultural Society held to-day it was decided to hold the next Royal Show in Palmerston North in conjunction with tho Manawatu A. and P. Association in November, instead of at tho end of January, 1929, as was previouslv decided upon.

“This is not profit. It is robbery,” said Dr. A. G. Waddell* in critiicising benzine prices at a meeting of the Hamilton Automobile Association last night. T>r Waddell said that ljcivnne sold for Hid in England cost just twice as much here. New Zealand was no further from the producing fields, where the price had been declining, while the local price was rising. The meeting discussed the Canterbury plan of co-operative buying of benzine, and decided to send an enquiry to the headquarters of the Auckland Association.
