THE COUNCIL

AVELLINGTON, July 6. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m.

The debate on tho Address-in-Reply was continued by Hons. Triggs, Michel and Garland. On the motion of Hon. Aldntyre it was adjourned till 2.30 tomorrow.

THE HOUS'D. After formal business was transacted in the House, the debate on the Ad-dress-in-Reply was resumed by Air H. E. Holland (Leader of the Opposition), who in the course'of his speech movea the following amendment to the motion before the House:—"That the following words be added : ‘ But we deem it our duty to represent to your Excellency that your Excellency’s advisers do not possess the confidence of the people of the country for, among others, the following reasons: They have failed to provide adequate financial assitance for farmers and homebuilders and they have permitted their policy relating to the Post Office Savings Bank and State Advances Department to be influenced by privatelyowned financial institutions to the detriment of the whole Dominion.’ ” The debate was carried on by Hon. Downie Stewart, Air A’eitch, Hon. J. A. Young, Alessrs E. J. Howard and J. Mason (Napier). The debate was adjourned on the motion of Hon. Buddo and at 11.30 p.m. the House rose till 2.30 to-morrow.
