Passengers who made the trip from Pictou by the Tamahine on Saturday afternoon had the unusual experience of seeing a whale harpooned. The steamer was in the vicinity of the whaling station at Te Awaite, inside Tory Channel, when the passengers saw one whale floating on the surfnco of the water,: dead, another dying, and a third being harpooned. Much interest was taken by the passengers in the proceedings, which were carried out in full view of those on board. The Hokitika Poultry Show Committee have received record entries for their show to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday next, at the Soldiers’ Hall. Among the entries there will be the celebrated champion Rhode Island Red Cock owned by M rs Davidson, of Christchurch, a champion winner at Melbourne, Sydney and at New Zealand shows. The Committee have decided to allow school children free admission on each afternoon between 3.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. The usual complete arrangements are being made and the display should prove a very attractive one.
The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Library Committee was held last evening at 7 o’clock, Present: Mr D. -J. Evans (in the chair), Dr Teiehelmanii, Messrs W. AYilson, H. M. CoulAon, J. W. Morris, ,1. Niven, 0. Heinz. Apology was made for the absence of Messrs' T. W. Duff and J . ,Maloney. The Chairman welcomed Mr Couison to a seat on the Committee, and stated they were glad to have his renewed co-operation in the management of the Institution. Air Couison acknowledged the welcome, stating he was pleased to see the Library continued in a flourishing condition. Various matters affecting the building were discussed. Air Niven reported a large show case was required for the albatross exhibit, which had been received from the Canterbury Museum. It was resolved to ascertain the cost. Accounts to the amount of £*22 os were passed for payment. The number of subscribers were reported to have increased to 120, a remark being passed at the sustained interest of the public. It was reported the Otago visitors hero on Monday and Tuesday had been greatly interested in the Museum room, which was kept open throughout their stay. Considerable attention was devoted to exhibits relating to the early davs of the Coast. 1
