SAWMILLERS’ MEETING
XKtV GRADING SYSTEM ADOPTED
GR FALMOUTH, Juno 39. A very large and representative meeting of the Committee of the .West Coast sawmillers was held at the office of Alessrs Al. .1. logarty and Co., yesterday morning, to hear Alessrs .1. AY. Collins, of the Industry and C nuaicrc® Department, Ward of the Forestry Department, and A. Seed, Secretary of the Federated Sawmillers’ Association, who are mem hers of the committee that was recently appointed by the Government to examine the circum--stnmes of the timber industry, and to reemincud any stems that could immediately be set afoot, which might bo calculated to effect a speedy improvement in the sawmillers’ outlook. It has long been felt that the sawmillers have not been giving proper attention to the grading of the timbers. that is necessary, and consequently a considerable amount of pro* flit j has been lost. The members of the Cr nimittee above referred to, have for the past fifteen months been working on a classification scheme. This scheme wa,s submitted at yesterday’s meeting for the approval of the. sawmillers. After considerable discussion during which many questions were asked, it was apparent that although a considerable amount of extra work would ho given, it would he more than compensated by the increase,il prices realised for the product. It was further explained l.y Air Collins that all the Government departments would in future deal only with sawmillers who adopted the classification as suggested by the Goinniittee.
The fallowing resolution was ca.rried : “That this representative meeting of sawmillers of the districts of (Irevinoutli and Hokitika strongly endorse the uniform classification and grading rules proposed and submitted b.v ’the .special Timber C 'inmittee. Further that the deliuition of maximum defects and blemishes allowable in each grade lie aKo fully endorsed.” A further resolution was carried:---“That il is the opinion of this mooting that any system of timber classification cannot he utilised to its lull advantage in this district until the sawmillers are more cffieientlv organis-
