POLITICAL. BRIBERY. SYDNEY, June 21
At the Royal Commission inquiring into Air Lambert’s charges, Air Frank Anstey (Labour member of the Federal House of Representatives) gave evidence to-day. Air Anstey stated that during 1919, he was offered money on behalf of the Nationalist Party to vacate his seat. The elections were being held at the time. Witness statsd that tlie man who made this offer was a well-known AJelbourne business man. Beyond stating this, Air Anstey declined to give his name. Air Anstey added that tho offer was made to him to withdraw his nomination for the Bourke seat, as the Nationalist Party thought that if he did so, they would have a good chance of winning it. No amount of cash was specified if lie agreed to the suggestion, but he was given to understand that it would be made worth his while.
TIN HARES BETTING. BRISBANE, June 21. The Full High Court to-day refused leave to appeal against the decision of tlie New South AVales Full Court, declaring betting at Alechanical Hare Aleetiugs to be illegal.
COOKS’ DISPUTE,
SHIPOWNERS STAND.
SYDNEY, June 21. Tho latest hitch in the cooks’ dispute is still unsettled.
The shipowners, at a special meeting at Alelbourne, decided to advise Air Tudehopc that his telegram (cabled yesterday) was unsatisfactory, and was a distinct breach of the terms of the settlement of the dispute. Meantime, until an adjustment is arrived at, the manning of all the vessels is to cease.
N.S.W. GOVERNOR, (SYDNEY, June 21. The New South AVales State Governor, Sir D. Do Chair has been notified from London that his term of office has been extended for twelve months till February, 1929. COAL COMPANY LIQUIDATING. (Received this day at 8.50 a.m ' SYDNEY, June 22. It is announced that Sydney Collieries Limited are going into liquidation owing to loss on production by strikes and continuous irritation tactics on the part of the minors. _ A. C. Russell (Chairman of Directors) declared a group of minors' wheelers had laid themselves out to keep the output below (350 tons daily; whereby the Company, which operates at Balmain, lost money every fortnight in addition to which the miners were deliberately absenting themselves from work, and arriving late.
COAL MTNEKo’ CONVENTION. SYDNEY, June 22. The Coal-Allners’ Convention decided the central governing body, is the only body competent in tlie future to sanction a strike. A LARGE FIRE. BRISBANE, June 22, A fire at Cunnamulla destroyed five shops, a picture theatre and one private residence. Tlie damage is undisclosed.
