EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS

GREAT GATHERING IN SYDNEY. AUCKLAND, Juno 18. The International Eucharist Congress which will commence in Sydney on September 6th. and continue till September 9th. promises to rival in splendour any of its twenty-nine predecessors. It will certainly surpass any religious -festival hitherto iw?Jd an Australia. Interest in the event is quickening throughout the Roman Catholic world, and’ in four or five weeks Church dignitaries and lay people in every country will ho setting out on a pilgrimage to Sydney. New Zealand is fortunate for two- reasons. She is close to tlie scene of the Congress and many notable people, including the Papal Legate, liis Eminence Cardinal Bonaventure Cerretti, will visit New Zealand) either on their way to Australia or on -their way back. Over a thousand New Zealanders have enrolled themselves as Congress members, and it- is expected the Dominion’s delegation will comprise at least 600. At first it was thought a special steamer would have to bo chartered, hint not all desiring to visit Sydney will be accommodated on inter-colonial vessels.

Apart from tho Congress Cardinal Cerretti will have many engagements to fulfil. He will go to Sydney via Suez and will leave with two members of the Papal Legate’s party by the Niagara on October 16 for Vancouver. During his short stay , in Auckland he will bo the guest, with ,a number of Irish bishops, of Dr Cleary, Bishop of Auckland.

A distinguished British priest, Father Afartmdalo, is expected to arrive at AVellington on July 13, and will spend a month in the Dominion. Advice has been received that two large Canadian delegations will be coming by the Niagara, due at Auckland on August 13. One of these parties, comprising over a hundred members, will make a short tour of the North Island before proceeding to Sydney. The other party, which is being organised by Air S. Jordan, will continue to Sydney by the Niagara. Arrangements are being made for the reception of the delegates in Auckland. The Canadian delegation will he headed by the Right Rev. Bishop Fallon, of Toronto. Sydney, will sec many distinguished visitors. Count Dya.nvifle, of Paris, will be secretary to the permanent committee of the Congress. A!. Eugene Sta.ndert, Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory, and member for Bruges in the Belgian Parliament, will be a member of tho court of the Papal Legate. It is stated that the delegation from Belgium will be a large one. Germany, Poland, dioceses of tbe Pacific, Italy, Great Britain, France, the United States and many other countries will he represented.
