The Minister of Labour, Sir Arthur Stecl-Mnitland, was asked in the House of Commons whether the Government would take early action to ratify the Washington Eight Hours Convention. He replied that the Government wished to see a workable convention which it thought would really achieve the object desired, and the sooner they could get to business with that the better he would be pleased. He understood that in all probability the international Labour organisation would he issuing a report at its October meeting, and for purposes of that report would ask for the views of the various Governments. The British Government would then give its views on the matter. SWARMS OF LOCUSTS. RUGBY, June 14. Palestine and Transjordan arc now reported to he free from swarms of migratory locusts. The damage done by them was not considerable, and tho field companies have been demobilised. The Palestinian Locust Service is demonstrating tile use of the guns used to fight locusts in Hainan, which is suffering from an invasion of young locusts.
