CAPTAIN FURNEAUX DEAD. NELSON, June 18
The death is announced of Captain Mark Furneaux, formerly of the Anchor Company and for many years Harbour Master at Westport. Since his retirement Furneaux lias been living at Port Nelson. [The deceased was a well known figure in local shipping circles when tho Anchor Coy’s liners were trading regularly to Hokitika in the eighties and nineties.]
FIRE ON STEAMER. AUCKLAND, June 17
An outbreak of lire occurred in the stokehold of the steamer “Canadian Challenger” at tho Prince’s Wharf last evening. The city brigade machinery and fittings in the stokehold were damaged, hut no damage was done to the cargo. The vessel was inspected by Lloyd’s Surveyor after the fire, and she sailed this morning for Wellington. TUBER CULOS IS COMMISSION. WAIPUKURAU, June 18. The Tuberculosis Commission, who visited Piikcora Sanatorium during the week-end, hearing the evidence of the -Medical Superintendent and seeing I every patient left last evening for Palmerston North en route for Auckland. VICE-REGAL MOVEMENTS. WAIPUKURAU, June 16. The Governor-General and Lady Alico Ferguson arrive at Waipukurau tomorrow by the express and will be met by the Mayor and Sir George Hunter, .M.P., and will attend tho Waipukurau Jockey Club ball in the evening. Mareno Glavas was fined £SO lor keeping a common gaming house and Joe Jcrkovicli £SO for assisting. The others were fined Cl apiece. A TRAGEDY. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 18. A shocking tragedy occurred at Hu-ran'-’a. During the night, a- farmer named Percy Surrey, was roused by a muffled report in bis wife’s bedroom. Finding the door locked he entered through a window and found his wife lying on the floor dead, with a siing'c barrel gun beside her, and his daughter i aged 19, at the'point of death from a gunshot wound, in bed, on which was a s|>ent cartridge. Appearances point to the assumption that Mrs Surrey, who was in indifferent health, had shot her daughter and then herself.

A whale measuring seventy-four foot in length and fourteen feet in height came up the Firth of Thames yesterday and was stranded on a shell hank in the AVaihou River near Thames. It was ,later hauled up on tbe beach where it is attracting a lot of attention. YOUTHFUL 'THIEF. PALMERSTON N., June 18. At the police court this morning Noe! Keith Coulter, aged 18 was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for theft. Accused also pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from a dwelling and lie was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
