REPUBLICAN CONVENTION

(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copy-right.)

(United Service.)

NEW YORK, June 14

News from Convention Hall states the delegates foregathered this morning, certain tliaat a minority report of the Platform Committee on the agricultural plank would bo brought to the floor of tho Convention, and a test vote demanded. The minority group is led by the Lowden-Curtis-Watson alliance, which, nter-alia, supports the features of the MeNarry-Houghen measure, to which Messrs Coolidge and Hoover are irrevocably opposed. Senator Smoot (Chairman of the Platform Committee) read tho document. , The first actual mention of Mr Hoover’s name in the platform commending his., activities in connection with the Mississippi flood produced half a minutes’ applause and a few diminutive snake dances from delegates. Senator La. Folette (son of the late Senator) who- was a stormy petrel of the Senate, presented the minority report. La Folette,, one of the youngest Federal legislators, and its best speaker, addressed the crowd, which a moment before had cheered the commendation of Coolidge Administration and now cheered as enthusiastically La Folette’s rebukes of Coolidge for vetoing the MeNarry-Houghen Bill. The speaker also condemned a huge Navy as conducive to war and military conscription. He also condemned the oil scandals and asked Republicans to repudiate Full and oilier Republicans involved in them. NEW YORK. June It. 'Pile Convention voted against numerous platform proposals submitted by La. Follette; also against the minority agricultural plank, despite the desperate support of agriculturalists. In this ease the victory by 817 votes was an overwhelming success for Hoover. President Butler (Columbia Uni\ersity) proposed a substitute for the prohibition plank, asking that the “hypocrisy of prohibition be done away with.” He was unceremoniously voted down and the majority platform adopted by acclaim. The Convention went into recess until seven o’clock when the Presidential nominee will be chosen. RIVAL FACTIONS.

KANSAS CITY. June 12

The scene of greatest interest late to-day was transferred to a meeting of the Platform Committee, which was stormed by about one hundred farmers. These, incidentally, are the only agriculturalists out of the “ hundred thousand ” who wore to stampede the Convention. They shouted against Mr Hoover, but it is now definite that the latter will dictate the agricultural ' presideid, Butler, of Columbia University (Republican Party Chairman) appeared and demanded the adoption of the absolute repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. Senator Borah-, however, wants the inclusion of a proviso for tlie drastic enforcement of prohibition. President Butler threatens to take the issue to the floor of the Convention which would cause some excitement, since he would be opposed by Senator Borah, but President Butler is hopelessly beaten in advance.
