A Blenheim taxi driver was recently oontmissioned by three natives to drive thepi jioine to the Wainui .pa, and on reaching tlie village lie was directed to pull up outside a certain cottage. “How much do we.owe you?’’ inquired one of the natives, and, on being Informed, went on: “Well, you wait here while I get to hoot from te wajhine” With that the speaker jumped from the car and vanished within the Jiou.se. Minutes passed, and the second native, remarking that his friend was gone a long time, left the car to investigate. He also vanished within the house. Again there was a long wait, punctuated by the stentorian snores of the third Maori, sleeping peacefully in the back of the oar. Finally the patient taxi unan decided to make inquiries for himself. The I wrathful taxi man returned to the | car determined to get satisfaction out j of the sleeping Maori, or take it out ■ of his hide, but the wily third party had taken advantage of his absence at the cottage to quietly vamoose.
