TUESDAY, JUNE 12th, 1928. OVERSEER AIIELNER’S RETORT;. I have the honour to report upon the progress of work during the month of May. NORTHERN RIDING. -Mulfroy’s Bridge Protection was continued as weather permitted, and 10p links of lower scrub fascine laid and anchored with a single course of stone enclosed in a continuous wire net, se cured to sunken anchors at six feet centres; the bank above the net battered and faced with a sheathing of manuka scrub. Some repair work was also effected to the old protective work below Palmer’s Creek outlet. MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to Red Jacks Track, between Christchurch Road and tlie terrace toward Stafford, the work being confined to corduroying the very soft spots and the construction of a culvert over a swampy watercourse. The roadman attended to clearing, gorse and blackberry from Arahura Valley and Blue Spur-Araliura Roads;; also repairs to motor-worn holes on Arahura Valley Road. CENTRAL RIDING. j Station Road.—This work was finally completed during the latter part of the month, flooded pits being responsibly in delaying the completion of metaljling for some time. The completed work is. a credit to the Contractors and will hear comparison with any work of a similar nature in the district. Maliinapua Creek Bridge.—This work was continued under the direction of Bridge-Foreman II. : Reynolds and completed before the end of the month. The structure lias a creditable appearance, tlie under portion being hardwood, silver pine and inner heart of liiiiau; stringers, decking, guards and handrailing being inner heart ol rimu. ' NEW WORKS.
Work was commenced on Seddon Terrace track widening; It. 'Winter, contractor; -Seddon Terace road deviation . W. Shannon, contractor, and Kokatalii road drainage, F. Vroblefski, contractor, during the latter part or the month. McArthur road, rcloriuing and metalling, Shannon and Cropper, contractors, was in hand before the close of the month. 'maintenance of highways.
Repairs were effected to the Highway between Ivanieri and McArthur load, portions being dressed and eon ten with line crushed metal, river beach and pit- gravel, in addition to roadside dumps which were used tor patching over a distance of four miles, 432 cubic: yards of gravel were used in repairs. Five miles of road were dragged with the heavy drag and rolled with the ten-ton roller. The inlets and outlets to several culverts, and tli? abutments of five bridges were cleared of blackberry and gorse growth. Defective and broken decking was lenowed on Kokatalii River and Hcslan’s Creek bridges. Koitcrangi Road was graded with the Austin Road grader from .McArthur Road to I. Wall’s residence. A damaged culvert on Upper,Kokatalii Road beyond Bladicr’s Road, six feet in width was redecked, and three new stringers placed in position. Water-tables were cleaned, overgrowth cleared, motor-worn holes repaired ; small slips removed from drains and water-tables; also 40 chains ol road dragged with the heavy road drag between Ivnnieri and Marti Road, and a twelve-inch diameter concrete pipe culvert constructed between Stripland and McKay’s creek bridges. % MAINTENANCE. Portions of Artliurstown, South Hokitika and Adairs Roads were dragged with the heavy road drag; the drain along Camp Street cleared and cleaned; overgrowth cleared and tables cleaned on Him Hun road; the roadside drain completed along J. Michel’s frontage at Koitcrangi. The stone crusher, elevator, stone feed, and storage bins were erected and quarry opened at Lime Kiln Reserve, Koitcrangi, Hi readiness to crush metal as soon ns one of the lorries is available for cartage. Koiterangi Road was graded, and a culvert reconstructed below D. Clarke’s holding. - SOUTHERN RIDING.
Petersen .Road Extension.—The balance of the grant was expended in the construction of a log culvert six feet in .width and three feet in height, clear of waterway, with approach. Adamson Road.—Reforming and metalling! The contractors have completed the formation, and 30 chains of metalling to dale. MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to damaged portions of Totara Road, and track, There is one slip and two damaged and defective culverts .that require repairing at a cost of £6 10s to allow rough vehicle traffic to use the road to the old sluicing claim. Repairs were effected to Detour, Richardson, and Adamson Ronds; slips removed from Bluff track, and defective .decking replaced on Roto, bridge. The roadman attended to flood damage, iepairs to Minehan’s Mill Road, repairs to Petersen, Wanganui Flat, and. Robinson Roads.
