HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JUNE Bth. The Council met at 7.45 p.m. Present:—Messrs W. Jeffries (DeputyMayor, in the chair), J. King, D. J. Evans, 11. W. Heeiian, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, and Dr Teiehelmann. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. SPECIAL -MEETING. A special meeting was held to deni with the making of bye-laws under the -Motor Regulations Act. After discussion a vote was taken as to the location of parking places, centre or sides of the roads. For the centre of the road, .Messrs Duff, Heinz, Armstrong, Teiehelmann and Jeffries. For sides of the street, Messrs King, Evans and Heenan. The centre of the road was agreed to. The report of the Motor Bye-laws Committee, read at last meeting and published, was then, with minor alterations agreed to. ORDINARY MEETING. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From District Medical Health Officer, forwarding Health Inspector’s report or May, 1928, also notices of infectious diseases.—Received; to receive attention. From Director, Town-Planning, re Section 1074, Hokitika.—Received and approved. From Wilson and Horton, Ltd., Auckland, submitting proposals for advertising Hokitika and district.— Received. From Ri. J. Stewart, relinquishing Section No. 544.—Received and accepted. From George Holley, notifying that lie is relinquishing Municipal Reserve, No. 576, from the Ist June, 1928. Received. From N.Z. Refrigerating Coy., forwarding cheque for 11s, abattoir fees for April.—Received. From W. H. Shannon, Rcvell Street, asking that Sewell Street drain he cleared of obstruction to allow Hood water to escape.—Received ; referred to Public Works Committee to report. From Town Clerk, Christchurch, forwarding copy of “ Diamond Jubilee Official Souvenir.” —Received. In answer y> an enquiry the 1 own Clerk stated that no invitation had been received for the Council to be represented at the,; jubilee celebrations.

From C. E. Sparkes, offering to purchase old sanitary cart for £s.—Received and accepted.

From R. W. Holmes and Son. Wellington acknowledging cheque for £63 12s lOd, and furnishing information re Hume Pipes.—Received. From Beautifying Society forwarding £9 17s. donations and stating willingness to pay £lO towards gravelling footpaths in Brit-tan and Weld Streets, adjoining Cass Square.—Received and a vote of thanks passed for donation. It was resolved that the latter work ho carried out. REPORTS. Accounts amounting to £B6 15s Id were passed for payment. From Manager, Abattoirs, reporting there were slaughtered during May, 36 cows, 41 bullocks, 56 heifers, 255 sheep, 14 lambs, 37 pigs, 13 calves.—Condemned 2 cows, 1 heifers, 1 bullock. Fees for period £77 9s 6d (same month last rear £7O 10s 6d). —Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT.

1 beg to report the following-work was carried out during the month. Four and a-hnlf chains of earthenware pipes (nine inch) were laid in Stafford Streets, between Sale and Rolleston Streets, a break in Boaley Street drain between Weld Street and Gibson’s Quay was repaired, a section of drain in Weld Street between Bealey and Hall Streets was cleaned out. Growth was cleared on Fitzlierbert Street footpath near the bottom of Cemetery Hill, and in Rolleston Street footpath near the bottom of Cemetery Hnl. and in Rolleston and Davie Streets between Stafford and Hampden Street, in Brittan Street between Weld

Street and Gibson Quay. The growth in Stafford Street between Livingstone Street and the east town belt was also cut down. Water services were put in at Mr Trotter’s in Sewell Street and at Mr Weiblitz’s on Gibson Quay. A concrete crossing .was put in at Keller’s Hotel iff Weld Street. The well at the corner of Rcvell and Stafford Streets was cleaned out, new pipes put in and the well filled up. The water main in Hampden Street was repaired and, two new pipes were put in Rolleston Street,, main. The reservoir was repaired, also two of the valves. During the month 24 eighteen-inch and 9 one-foot concrete pipes were made. Water in the reservoir averaged 3lt Sin for the month. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT. Tlie Public Works Committee beg to submit for your approval a list of proposed work for the' present year. The work to he carried out by the Borough staff as time and finance permits:— Tar Sealing.—Rcvell Street, approximate cost £43. Weld Street, reconditioning, 300 loads of screened gravel—£s2 10s ; tar-sealing and grit—£loo ; labour £so.—Total £202 10s. Hamilton Street, reconditioning, grit, tar, and labour—Total cost of £B7 10s. Footpaths, tar-sealing all footpaths that were recently curbed at a cost of £- 10s per chain—About £SO. Fitzlierbert Street, Between Weld and Starford Street to be patched with asphalt, and tar-sealed, at a cost ol £ls. Stafford Street. The same on north and south sides between Sewell and Revel! Streets at a cost of £ls. Drains.—Bealey Street, Already approved by’Council at a cost of £S7 10s. Sewell Street, The whole of this street requires piping between the wharf to a point opposite Mr E. C. Toohey’s residence. The total number of pipes required is 880, size 2ft by Jin., at a cost of £BBO. labour £356; total cost £1,136.

Curbing and Water Channelling.— Hamilton Street, at Mr Cowie’s corner, 2 chains at £4 chain; total £B. Fitzlierhcrt. Street, both east and west sides between Park and Hampden Streets, 20 chains at £4; total £BO. Stafford Street, along north side of cuss Square. Already approved by Counci Pat a cost of £SO. North Revel) Street, on .the west side from Dunedin Hotel, for a distance of 12 chains at £4 10s a chain; total £54. Water Channelling at Street Intersections.—On the east side of Revell Street at the intersections it is proposed to lay channelling in order to avoid the present drop from the footpath to the roadway. The number required is nine at a cost of 30s each.— Total £l3 10s.

Gravelling.-—lt is suggested that the front of the Police Station in Weld Street he gravelled. This will take about 40 loads at a cost of £B. The same in front of the Kanieri Electric Sub-Station in Wold Street. About 80 loads at a cost of £l6.

Footpath.—Tlie cost of completing the'footpath in Stafford Street between Rolleston and Davie Streets on tlie north side is estimated at £3O. Grand Total, £1906.. Received and consideration deferred till next meeting, the Town Clerk meantime to submit an estimate of probable revenue for the year. ORDER PAPER, Dr Teiehelmann moved:—“That the resolution dated the* 28th May. 1926, fixing tlie Annual License fee for kerbside petrol pumps at five pounds be rescinded.” "That the Council effect an insurance Policy with the State Fire Insurance to cover the Council’s legal liability in respect «of the issuing of Licenses permitting the erection and use of kerbside petrol pumps.” “That tlie annual license fee for kerbside petrol pumps be increased to £0 5s and that the increased fee operates at the next renewal iof each license.”

Seconded by Mr Heinz and carried The Council rose at 8.50 p.m.
