The Public Works Department has granted the Westland County Council £7O C for £ being a flood damage grant to capo with the erosion of the Kaknpotahi river above tbe County bridge. Mr IS. A. Wells, County ( huiruinn, at the request of the District Farmers’ Union, visited Station road, Eoitorangi, yesterday forenoon for the purpose of ascertaining local .requirements regarding the further extension of the road. Several settlers were persent and urged the road he carried on to link up with the Whiteonihe road. Mr Wells explained that the County Council had applied for a grant for the work, and in view of the desire to have the road constructed would press for its early extension to meet requirements. Mi- Seddon M.P. lias received tho following letter from the Minister of Public Works':-—‘‘"l am duly in receipt of your letter in which you advise that the Kokatahi Farmers’ Union lias requested you to urge authorisation of the expenditure of £I,OOO on the completion of Station Road, Koiterangi. In response to your letter I shall he pleased to arrange for full details to ho supplied and the request for financial assistance will receive early and careful consideration. I shall advise vou further at an early date.”

The Annual Ball of the Kumara Medical Association taxes place in the Memorial Hall, Ivumnra to-morrow (Friday) evening. The usual very complete arrangements have hoen made for a successful gathering.

Captain Bald of the Elsie reported last evening from Okuru that two bolts in the rudder were broken, being discovered while making an inspection. They had the rudder adrift and were repairing it and would be ready for sea to-day. The weather there was line but not bright.

It was announced at the Winter Show at Kokatahi yesterday, that many settlers up and down the district are booking up for the farmers trip to Otago next week. A round of engagements at Dunedin and district is fixed which should give the travellers a lmppy time.

The new gas holder at the local works was inflated with air yesterday as -a try-out. Being of the telescope variety it rose to a considerable height, and has become a feature of the surroundings in the Eastern suburbs. The new holder will he inflated again, before being linked up with the gas supply and town service. Probably during next month it will he in regular action.

The holiday attraction on Monday evening (King’s Birthday) will he the Annual Social Dance of the Hokitika Bowling Club, notable for the very successful manner in which it always passes off and the very complete arrangements of the ladies’ committee. Come along to the monster Paddy’s Market which is being held in the Soldier’s Hall on Saturday. The proceedings open at II a.m. and from that hour onwards the various stall holders will he kept busy disposing of their many and attractive goods. The “oldest inhabitant” at the Hokitika Mental Hospital died yesterday afternoon. The debased was admitted to the institution on May 30th, 1871 and lie passed away on May 30th, after only a few days illness. lie was admitted, from the StalTordtown district, the certifying medical men being Drs. Dermptt and Bosetti, while Mr G. 0. I'itzgerald, 8.M.; was the committing magistrate. All those connected with the committal -and reception of the patient have long passed away. The deceased was 87 years of age so that while only 30 years of age when admitted, 7)7 years of his life were passed in the local institution. The deceased was hale and hearty up to eleven days ago when he took to bed an I died of senile decay and heart failure. Prior to being admitted to the hospital quarters he had been able to do light duties, and was a good and willing worker.
