New Zealand requires the unselfish service of all her people-. She needs most the services of her young men. Her place, as a great country, depends much more upon the future than it does upon the- present, hut foundations now cannot Ik 1 neglected without infinite loss. In this respect our universities are hardly assisting as they might do. Because political life is not as satisfactory as it is thought it might, be our students appear to look upon it with indifference if not actual distaste. Healthy ambition would rather seek to improve by action than to impair by neglect. It would he more hopeful if. instead of the present apathy, there could be set up. of natural rather than o! artificial purpose, a healthy rivalry among young men as to who could serve New Zealand earliest and best. —“Poverty Bay Herald.
