It was stated that the Bor--011 I'll 'Council was receiving no timber royalties in spite of the fact that si considerable quantity of timber passed over the Ivorougli roads, and for that reason a request was made that the Government provide a grant for the purpose of repairing the bridge. As you are no doubt aware, similar requests have I*oll made on previous occasions, hut it was considered that Government assistance was not warranted. However, the whole position has been again inquired into, and it is found that the bridge is in fair condition, although certain repairs are undoubtedly necessary. The cost of maintaining this bridge was apportioned by a Commission in IPO", between the Kuniara Borough Council and Grey and 'Westland County Councils. and as those bodies are receiving heavy traffic fees. I am of the opinion that they should accept the responsibility of keeping the bridge in a reasonable state of repairs. In these circumstances, I regret to state that T am unable to accede to the request for a Government grant.”
