THE FIRST MATCH. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. WELLINGTON. May 16. At the N.Z. Rugby Union meeting to-night, the following cablegram was received front the South African Rugby Union: "By speeding up the boat from Durban, the team could land at Capetown only one day late. Otherwise, by mail train, they could arrive by May 20th. and if necessary, play the first game on .May 31st. Mr Ifornig is deciding between the above alternatives. If his decision is for dolav. as suggested, the Board President will wireless Mr TTornig front Durban, and keep you posted. Hie first game is against a team from country dobs only. Cancellation would probably exclude the whole team from further meeting your players. The game is regarded as an exhibition rather than as a trial of strength, hud as an opportunity of welcome. Everyone will make full allowance for your disadvantages, and ejivo every credit for a sporting spirit. Cancellation means intense and widespread disappointment, thousands having arranged to come great distances for this welcome, and seats have already been sold at it- shining. The Company now expects tho Euripides heft at daybreak on May 27tli. allowing The team two days ashore at Durban." Mr K. S. Dean said that the South African team had acted in sporting spirit in keeping its first fixture m New Zealand in 1021 after a late arrival, and our team should act in a similar manner, if possible. It was agreed to leave the question of playing the first match to the discretion of the manager of the New Zealand team, -Mr W. Ilornig.
