A ear, containing four Gisborne residents and driver. G. A\’. Armstrong, was traversing the Wbarerata Hill on the South Road when it encountered a man wandering along the road in a dazed condition, who stated he bad an accident a half mile further on. He was found to be Meadowcroft, who was entirely unfamiliar with the road, lie had failed to negotiate a turn and the car bad crashed down an almost perpendicular slope. Meadowcroft being unable to find any trace of bis wile, bad climbed back to the road in search of assistance.

The accident occurred about -1.30 in the heavy rain. The reselling party scrambled down the bank, first encountering the bonnet, of the car. then the side-screens and numerous items of luggage, and fragments of the machine and finally about 100 yards down the shattered remains of llio ear itself.

A search revealed Mrs Aloadowerott lying about fifty paces away in an unconscious condition, covered with blood and obviously badly hurt. Ibe rain was coming down in sheets and the party were faced with a difficult problem in transporting the injured lady up the hundred yards of dill to the road. Finally, after much toil, they accomplished the task and brought the injured people to the hospital.

It was evidenced that Behan leased the ball for Sunday evening at L’S. the committee making their own arrangements with regard to stall, etc. Ylr Hannan, solicitor for the defence. quoted the English Sunday Observance Act. 1780. to the effect that an owner or leasee who lot a hall to others could not be held liable.
