STALKING SEASON

SOME SOUTH WFSTLAID TROPHIES.

PEMBROKE April 20.

The stalking season in South Westland opened with wonderfully fine weather, but when it did break the stalkers had a rough time with flooded rivers and washed camps. The stags were in fine condition and some first class trophies were secured and no doubt many good heads are still carried by the stags that grew them.

Owing to unfavourable stalking weather all the South Westland stalkers have come out except Mr Godfrey Williams and Colonel and Mrs Strutt.

Some of the best trophies were procured hv Major Wilson’s party who shot a fifteen pointer -10 inches long ■l3 inches wide, a fourteen pointer -10 inches long 3D inches wide, a royal 43$ inches long, 44i wide; a thirteen pointer 41 i long -14 V wide; a royal -111 inches long 40 inches wide.

Mr Dalrymple got a 13 pointer 42 inches long, 41) inches wide.

Mr Godfrey Williams (England) shot a fine 14 pointer 43 inches long 40 inches wide; a 15 pointer 42 inches long 35) inches wide. Mr Forbes (Christchurch) shot a lino heavy royal 45 inches long 40 inches wide (5 inches beam . at the head of Moeraki River, this being the lirst head brought out of this part of the ‘Westland forest.

At the time of writing Col. Strutt had 2 fine heads a 14 and 1.3. hut tlicmcnsuronients are not available until t-the Colonel comes out.

Messrs Mathias and McTlrnith shot a line II pointer 13 long and 42 inches wide and a 13 pointer -11.1 long 41 inches wide; and a 10 poiner 45V long 40’ wide.
