The Governor-General addressed the
Auckland Chamber of Commerce at luncheon to-day on the subject of his travel' ill New Zealand and his impressions on its general progress. Ho said that the prosperity of a country depended on the development and expati'ion of its export industry, and aL-i on the development of its homo market. There should lie no interference, however, well meant and however fruitful of immediate benefits, with the normal workings of ordinary economic laws. ‘•You cannot have any great increase in your home market and industry, unless you have a .sufficiently large population, and that leads on to the theory and object of immigration,” added Sir Charles Fergusson. “You must rememlier that immigrants a is* not people who take Bread out of the mouths of other people, il they are the right sort of immigrants, and can he employed In production. They have purchasing power, which assists industrv.”

Police watching the premises of Derbysbiros Ltd.. arrested Harry Driver, a storeman, when he was leaving at 8.30 p.m., with a parcel of goods belonging to the firm, valued at CIO. He was charged to-day with the tlielt of the goods, also with obtaining L'39 by false pretences.
Alfred Mcßurnev, another storeman, was charged with receiving stolen goods from Driver. Both pleaded guilty. • The false pretences were worked by false vouchers, signed by Mcßurnev. for packing cases, allegedly bought by Driver under an arrangement with his employers. Driver was remanded for sentence till to-morrow. Mcßurnev was admitted to twelve months' probation. PUBLIC’ SERVICE APPEAL BOARD. AVELLINGTON. April 19.
