The recommendation of the Westland Acclimatisation Society to open the opossum season in Westland this year from I I tli Juno to lltli August, inclusive. lias been approved by the Department of Internal Affairs.
Tin* members of the Westland Electric Bower Board have been invited by Westland Bower Ltd. to pay a visit of inspection to the Duffer generating station to-morrow. The party will leave the County Chambers at 1 p.m. sharp. It will be possible to accommodate a limited number of others interested if notified in advance, when scats will he reserved.
A fatal accident occurred at Westport on Wednesday afternoon at alwiut two o'clock, the victim being Mr Edward S. Rowley, of Romiily street. Westport, and a well-known resident of that town and a member of the Bailer Progress League. .Mr Rowley was engaged with a youth named Mathewsoii in repairing a house lielonging to.him. and when in front of the building one side of the frontage fell forwards toward' the street oil top of Mr Rowley. He received fatal injuries. Dr. Foote was summoned but death supervened before he arrived. Deceased. who was a middle-aged man leaves a willow and a daughter. .Mrs Colin Parker, who resides at Wai-iti, NeUon. In his youth Mr Rowley was a prominent- athlete.

The comedy " Nobody's \\ idow,” presented at the Princess ’lheatrc last -evening by Mr .1, C. Harr (hy arrangement with .). C. Williamson Ltd.) attracted a fair attendance. ’I lie plot was cleverly conceived and the interest was held throughout with the many interesting situations that arose throughout the course ol the play, the principals being well selected and ably supported. In consequence ol the adverse weather conditions marring the linaneial success of the race meeting last week, the Hokitika Municipal Rand decided unanimously at a meeting ol members this week, not to make any charge to the Westland Racing Club for the musical programme provided. The kindly thought of the Rand is appreciated very greatly by the ( lub. and a letter of thanks has been forwarded to the members.
An amusing incident occurred at the sports at Wnikohu, Poverty Ray. on Faster Monday. A lad about to enter for an event for hoys under ten years, was asked to give his age. lie replied. am ten to-day. ’ \\ hen the official explained that the race was lor hoys under 10. he laughingly remarked, to the amusement of those within hearing ‘■| am only nine, because I was not horn until 11 o’clock in the afternoon. As the race was run at 2.1 A, the lad s entry was received.

The “ Arens ” states—A very substantial improvement in the drey Bar was disclosed by soundings taken by the Harbourmaster (Captain Cox) last evening, when an increase ill the depiii of water to the extent of A feet inches was registered. The sounding* for the previous day revealoil a depth of lb feet A inches, and yesterday there was a depth of 20 feet !> inches, both records hemp; obtained at high water. A heavy swell continued throughout the day, however, and the bar remained unworkable until evening, when the sea moderated, and the rising tide made the bar workable, and enabled the lour steamers in the roadstead t > enter the port, and the Titoki. which bad been held up Itcre for over a week, to leave for Onakaka.
As a consequence of llie inroads of the Watr.roa liver on the main south road near Parkers’ Creek deviation, a Intlier deviation of the main highway, probably a mile in length will he necessary. The river shows signs ol lurtlier erosion which makes the problem tbe more difficult. A temporary byroad has been made restricting transport to light loads. Loading is rest rieted also crossing AVaitangi bridge, where two piles were washed out. ami traffic is limited to cars for the time hemp. Vehicle traffic is also held up on the AVaiho-AA'ohekn road. In addition to the serious block at W aikuktipa. there are other slips on the roadway. Pack horses are getting through at present. The question of a new road over the AVaikukupa saddle will present some engineering difficulties in the effort to secure a suitable prude.
Advice has beet!-received by .Mr D. J. Evans that the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Social Club is running a railwav excursion to (Ireymouth and Hokitika on Saturday. April l?^th. There are odd for Hokitika and 250 for Greymouth. The Hokitika people have been asked to extend the visitors the same welcome as lasi year, as it appears the visitors then enjoyed the local hospitality. and many ot the same laces will be seen here again. tbe writer -ay-. Enquiry is being made also as to slielter and any oilier assistance which can be piveii. The necessary arrangement* will be made here for the visitors as before, and any citizens willing to help in the matter are asked to communicate with -Mr Evans in the meantime, pending final arrangements for the trip being completed.
