It is with satisfaction and pleasure that I have the honour to present to you the annual report and balance sheet. Although ,the balance sheet shows a debit balance the deficit is more than covered bv the assets of this union. The season was indeed a very successful one so far as we were concerned. During the year the following representative matches wore played at Hokitika namely, South Canterbury and Ashburton County and the Greymouth reps, and during the year the Westland seniors went on tour to Greymouth and Reefton, the latter occasion being in quest of the Dittmau Shield, but the liiangahua reps proved again able to hold the local Ixivs off. The gate receipts were £lO lower than the record season, hut wo were faced with more than the usual expenditures. AYe sent tlie seniors to Greymouth and Reefton and the juniors reps to Greymouth, as well ns giving the visiting teams a real welcome to the district and showing them the scenic resorts of our famous district. The union was rewarded by the sincere thanks of the visitors who were loud in their praise of the local union’s efforts to make their stay a, pleasant
The annual seven-aside tournament was held and proved one of outstanding attractions of % t fio year, and there was spirited competition for the trophies. The senior teams of our district again united with the Greymouth teams and the Kanieri team were .successful in winning Hie main divsion and the Excelsiors were successful in winning the Knock-out competition. Ruth local teams carrying off Ihe trophies speak For the wonderful improvement made in their play, which can only lie attributed to playing with outside teams in the Grey distriot.
The union and district, were indeed gratified to have one of our players-, namely E. Freitas, selected for the trials for All Black honours and to have the satisfaction of knowing that if lie plays up to his form this season he is going to he a big advertisement lor Coast football and will surely represent New Zealand. To Air P. •Jamieson we also extend oilr good wishes for further selection this year.. The snli-iiiiioii has to thank the Press for its great help, also the Referees’ Association, without its members the game could not go on; Air A'arrall for his assistance as time-keeper. Air Herring. caretaker and custodian, to Mr I’aitridge. Mr Williamson and Father McKay for their interest in srhool h.Hjt.h;i|l. ami we hope to have their hearty to-nperntion this season. The union has also to thank Mr Adams. West Coast selector and Mr Dowell, the local selector for their valuable assistance and time given to tin* game for the players.
The union extends its thanks to ATr \\ . Keller lor the use of the meeting room during tin- season free of charge, also to Mr Gaylor for his help during the season assisting to flag the field and also attention to gates. The sub-union has also to thank ATr W. Newman, of Newmans Abhors, for hi- many kindnesses during the season in helping the union to make the visiting teams* stav in our town pleasant and enjoyable.
1 would recommend tin- incoming committee to conserve their funds and make an endeavour this year to purchase a complete repre-ent.nt ive outfit for the representative team, ft enhances the appearance of the team, and by appointing a zealous officer to take charge of the outfit if would he [Xissilile to keep the set for a number of seasons, and would, do credit to the players when they are asked to fake their place in the rep team.
The balance sheet, is very clear and needs little explanation, members fieing conversant with the expenditure. As usual the Council gave the union every consideration and the 7ft per cent, of takings ha- proved n ver\ -at isfactory arrajigonient to both parin'- The item of £29 Ids to the W.C.R.U. was the profit on the Canterbury match ami had to go to t lie governing body. This union also assisted tin' W.C.R.U. h.v jiaying tinexpense of local reps lo Westport, amounting to Cl2.
The tour to Reefton called fee an expenditure of £3O, and in return the union received as its share of tfie gate leeeipts £o Is. This trip will pro- . liable have to slip (his season unless the union has a very suecesslul year. Ashburton County were unfortunate with weather eruditions for their match and consequently their percentage of the gate was only £3 Ins, but thee were thankful for the amount and they were well pleased with their trip to Hokitika. Before closing this report 1 hare to [tay special praise to the junior representative team, ft wos indeed a worthy comhinnt ion. and its undefeated record sneaks for itself. 'lbis team should lie better than ever this sea-ou. fn passing I must pay special nraise to the wonderful form shown i.v the junior half-back, AI. Davidson, as coming from the school team to junior half he has shown himself lo he ■me of our coining [Havers. The school team [flayed numerous repro-ntative matches for the, season and this team is a credit to the subunion and every credit must he given to their coaches. ATessrs Partridge and Williamson.
