ROSS NEWS.

(By ‘ Arenee.’) A social evening was given here recently by Mr and Mrs .). Bridgenian at their residence and a very pleasant evening was entertained, music being supplied by several ot the party. It was with profound regret that we learned of the death of one of the old Coast pioneers. Mrs Sarah Ann Gardiner. who passed away peacefully at Boss on Friday night. Deceased, who was 8" years of age. and the wife of the late Wm. Gardiner, was born in Wales, in 1841. and bad lived in New Zealand over fifty years, practically all that time being spent on the West Coast. Three daughters, Mrs Stewart, Kumara. Mrs Steele. Greyniouth. Mrs T. Coyle. Hokitika, and two sons. Arch. Gardiner (Alt. Bonnr) and Harold (Boss) are left to mourn her loss.

The heavy storm on Friday night caused floods in the southern districts

which did a considerable amount of damage, the most serious being tho damage done to Stuart and Chapman’s bridge at K-akapotnlii. when some four spans were washed away, about a dozen piles being broken or washed out. The lop hamper included several large steel girders of between 40 and 50 feet in length. These will probably he secured again but the work of repairing the damage will he costly and probably take several months to complete. The company are fortunate in having two haulers operating on the north side of the river from which they will he enabled to draw a supply of logs, thus preventing a stoppage in the mill work. The Rev. A. .1. Petrie (formerly of Grey mouth) vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton, held services in the morning and evening in St. Paul’s Church. Ross, both services being largely attended. The Rev. gentleman proceeds south during the week where he will Hold several services.

BOSS FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Boss Football Club was held in the Totara Hall last Tuesday evening. S. P. Evans. Esq. presided over an attendance of about 20. The Secretary (Mr AY. Clarke) presented the balance sheet for the past year which showed a substantial credit balance. The report and balance sheet were received and approved. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President. S. P. Evans Esq.; CluflvCajit. das. A hleson : ViceCaptain, E. Mitchell; Secretary and Treasurer, AY. Clarke; Selection Committee. Captain. A’ice-Capt. and Secretary. Mr P. S. Moor©, of Hokitika, was appointed the club’s delegate. It was decided to enter for the junior competitions under the Hokitika Suit-Union. Players have already started practice and the team which includes a number of young players promises to give a good account of themselves during the coming season. The euchre tournament and dance held on Saturday evening in aid of the local Convent drew a large attendance the function being quite a success The euchre prizes were won by Air AI. Nolan Ist. (V do 7. towels) ; Air F. Fellows 2nd. (umbrella); ATiss B. Pvan 3rd. (aluminium kettle); Air A. Afa.son Jth. (table-cloth). The music for the dance was supplied by Afix.s Evans’ Orchestra.
