The death of Mr .Joseph Homy Williams. of Blackball, who bad lieen ailing for some time, took place at his residence oil Tuesday. The late Mr Williams was a native of Motherwell, Scotland, and was 3“ years of age. He leaves a widow and one son to mourn their bereavement. HeMmd been about three years in the Dominion.
Owing to the fact that very little support has been given to the Easter open tournament by members of the Grey Club, and other West Coast clubs, the committee of the Gieymouth Golf Club has decided to abandon the tournament, and to substitute therefor an informal programme of matches to be played on Saturday next.
There will lie several visiting trainers for the Hokitika race, meeting on Thursday next. The Canterbury contingent will include Messrs Pearson, Wonnnld, McLellnn, Christinas, Adamson, Longley, Nurse, Payne and Bench, all of whom have horses engaged at the meeting. The fields should be good throughout the day. The hurdle race is expected to he an interesting event. Both trotting races have filled exceptionally well. The meeting sliotiikl draw considerable patrontigo. The Municipal Band will lie in attendance at the meeting.

The Hokitika Lawn Tennis Club will close the match playing season on Saturday next when a Combined Handicap tournament will be played. The finals'for the Junior Girls’ Handicap Singles for Mr Partridge’s trophy, Miss Helen Stavelcv, scr. v. Miss Jean Dowell, 10. and for the Ladies’ Handicap Singles for Mr YaralPs trophy, Miss Lewis, scr., v. Miss Irwin 15, will also be played off. The final for Dr Baird's trophy for the Men’s Handicap Singles. Mr Partridge owe 10, v. Mr Christianson 5, will be played off during next week. A general invitation is extended to visaing players and visitors to be present on Saturday afternoon.
An inquest on the death of Patrick Joseph Casey, a Grey County Council employee, who met his death on Monday morning last, through a collision between the County Council lorry, driven by George Carlyle, and a horse and cart, the property of E. Ashton, driven by Robert Frankpitt was held yesterday. The collision occurred on the Paroa side of the South Beach railway crossing. The lorry was going in the direction of Paroa, and the cart was being driven in the direction of Greymouth. After hearing considerable evidence the jury, after a, retirement of 40 minutes, returned the following verdict: —That derased. Patrick Casey, met his death through shock following ■on an injury to the brain, caused by a fracture of the base of the l-kull. through having fallen from the County Council’s lorrv on Anril 2nd. 1923, following a collision with a cart at the South Beach railway crossing. We are further of the opinion that the eollison. under the circunista nces. was accidental. Also that the following ’rider be brought to the notice of the authorities <oncerncd : Thai the visibility at this crossing be improved, and that until such is carried out. slow notices be erected.
