COMING ELECTIONS

PARTY ACTIVITY

WELLINGTON, April 2.

The complicated machinery incidental to a general election is now in process of erection by the Electoral Department, in anticipation of the elections to be bold soon after tiie coming Parliamenary session.

Accommodation' at the bead office of the Department, in the Government buildings annexe, is sufficient for ordinary requirements, but the advent of an election necessitates large space for the handling of an immensely increased volume of clerical and other work. Accordingly, the Department is now removing to the ground floor of the Huddart, Parker Buildings, in Post Office Square, to occupy rooms formerly used by the Tourist Bureau. This will meet the special requirements of the Department until after the election.

Although the election is still several months away, and the third session o! the sitting Parliament has yet to run its course, interest in the coming contest is now quickening weekly, and .Ministers and members are taking early pro-sessional opportunities of setting their political houses in order.

The Labour Party’s organisation is fairly well advanced, being maintained in campaign order continuously The Reform Party is strengthening its forces, and the Liberals and Nationalists are also active. The new United Party has been campaigning busily throughout the North and South Islands, and promises to announce the names of its candidates very shortly.

The part to be played by the Country Party seems very uncertain. No candidates have been announced, and it is said that it is not likely that a move in that direction will be made for some months.
