CRICKET.

AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. DUNEDIN, April 2. Badeock had Grimmett feeling for them lor several overs. Twice in succession, the hall thudded on to the batsman’s pads. MeGirr with renewed vigour howled again towards the pavilion. The spectators, in the hope that the New Zealand score would not he passed, were on edge and repeatedly loud cheers greeted hump hall catches, whicli were thought to be genuine. Badcock continued to heat Grimmett all the way with swingers. Lowry, dispensing with point and bowling round the wicket gave MeGirr a spell. The game lapsed into a dull period. A yell and then a prolonged murmur went round the ground when the batsmen as a result of a misunderstanding and accidental obstruction by Lowry, who was bowling, were caught mid-way between the wickets. Blunt fielded the hall and Grimmett did not try to get to the crease. However, the throw-in went astray. It looked as though the chance was purposely let go on account of the obstruction. Lowry went on pounding down leg stuff, hut although runs were kept down, the batsmen remained firmly lodged. Badcock at this, stage had howled 13 overs for 9 runs. Lowry’s leg trap was being steadily avoided by Grimmett, Oxenham was watching Badcock so carefully that the crowd began cheering ironically every time the ball was hacked. A quarter of an hour before the lunch adjournment Blunt replaced Badcock and had Oxenham thinking with a good over. MeGirr resumed the attack at the other end. Runs now came more freely, both batsmen laying on the wood to strokes before the wicket and also finding openings down the gully. Lowry

again came on to try his luck with tin leg theory, hut the batsmen saw that the wood was put down in the right place. Then just before the adjournment Blunt clean howled Grimmett. The partnership had realised 09, and the time being 81 minutes. The score at the adjournment was 8 for 102 (Oxenham not out 30, Grimmett h. Blunt 34, extras 8). Blackic joined Oxenham after lunch and scored a single off Blunt’s thirl ball. MeGirr took up the attack Ironi the top end and dean-howled Blackie in the first over.—los-9-1. The last man was McXamee, who after shaping in an uncertain manner, drove MeGirr nicely through covers for 2. McXamee opened up and sent a leg hall lroin Blunt careering to the boundary. McNamee made 12 runs in breezy style, but he went out l.b.w. after making the dozen. Oxenham carrying his bat for 46, with Ihe total at 188. New Zealand’s opening pair were Mills and Dempster, hut the latter lasted only ten minutes. He was clean bowled by McXamee with a beautiful hall. B—l—3. Foley joined .Mills. He sent his first hall to the fence and began playing pretty cricket. Mills, however, was not at ease. McNamee clean howled Holey, lint he was no-balled. At 14, Mills, who was in for 63 minutes, put his leg in front of a hall irom Blackie and went out l.b.w. 50—2 —14. Blunt went in amid cheers, hut the second hall he snicked into Oldfield's hands. 50—3—0.

Ait ten, time tlie score stood at 8 lor 7d. Foley. however. did not last long on resinning. as lie snieked Hlackie to Woodfull in the slips. 75—4—42. Lmvry and Hamilton, in partnership, looked promising, but the latter opened out to Grimmett. and was caught neatly at deep long-on lit Alexander. 85—5—I.
