FRAUD CHARGE

WELLINGTON, April 2.

Donald Gillies and John George I'Tirey were remanded till April 18, on a charge of conspiracy to defraud the National Insurance Company of £9O, by allegedly insuring a second hand rnotor-car, and caused it to lie destroyed by fire. Eurey was allowed bail. Gillies was refused bail on the police representations. CLAIM FOR £3OOO SUCCEEDS. GISBORNE, .March 31.

At the Supreme Court judgment was given by Mr Justice Ostler in the case of Depelichet. McLeod and Co.v., y. W. I). Lysner, TTie claim was for £300(1 on a guarantee allegedly given by defendant to cover credit at Gisborne ior his brother. The Court gave its decision for plaintiff for the full amount, with interest at 7-j per cent.

In connection with the sub-division ol the Me Hardy property recently acquired by the Borough Council, portion ol which is to be handed over to the Crown in connection with the Massey Agricultural College, the Borough Council decided last evening that the area ol the latter part be 21. V acres. Reservations were made regarding access to the bush area, which is to be a municipal reserve; also in regard to the cost ol erection of bridges and fences.

Leonard Charles Haskell was to-day .sentenced to three months hard labour on a charge of being unlawfully on premises at night. Magistrate Mosley said people must be protected from itinerant canvassers of this .kind. On a further charge of theft, accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. A HARBOUR. ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND. April 3. The scow Havoc, loaded with stone, when being towed up the harbour bv the launch Orere. was struck by the coastal steamer llikurangi off North Head, about ten o’clock last night, the llikurangi being outward hound for Whangarei. Almost immediately the Havoc began to settle down, water pouring in through a hole forward. The crew of the scow scrambled on hoard the launch which came alongside. Then the scow immediately turned turtle, tipping the cargo of stone into the sea. This morning the scow was towed up the harbour.
