An unusual point was raised in the 1 Hamilton Magistrate’s Court during the hearing of a civil claim for damages arising out of a motor accident. The police, who had been subpoened to give evidence, claimed special privilege for statements taken from the plaintiff, and defendant, on the ground that these were State documents, and should not he used. The Magistrate, Mr AVvvern Wilson, held that no such authority to withhold important evidence, ] as undoubtedly was contained in the statements, could he claimed by the police, and ordered them to he read. The death took place at Greymouth Hospital this morning at 3 o’clock of ATr Fred Finch, a well-known resident of Arahura Road. The deceased was an inmate of Westland Hospital for some time and was taken to Gre.vmoulh yesterday for the purpose of taking him to Christchurch for treatment, lad he died n.s stated. He was a single man. aged about 36 years, and leaves a number of brothers and sisters being a. member of the well-known Finch family, of Arahura Road. The deceased was a sawmill employee for many years. 'Die Town Hall. Greymouth. was well filled on Saturday night for the benefit tournament conducted by the Grey Boxing Association for the widow and family of the late Dick Pacsoo. one of the best known figures in boxing circlesfor a number of years.
